Earning rate

Instacart Mastercard® cardholders can Earn 5% cash back on Instacart app and Instacart.com purchases, and on travel purchased through the Chase Travel Center. Earn 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations and on select streaming services. Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.

This is a top earning rate for consumers who regularly use Instacart and can also be valuable for average consumers who spend on everyday purchases. The only drawback with this earning rate is that in order to earn the 5% cash back on travel, you must purchase it over the phone through the Chase Travel Center. This extra step could hinder your ability to maximize your earnings in that category. Overall, though, this is a pretty great earning rate for a no-annual-fee card.

Redeeming rewards

You have a number of valuable options when it comes to redeeming your Instacart Mastercard® rewards. You can redeem for:

  • Cash back: Choose to receive your rewards either as a statement credit or as a direct deposit. There is no minimum rewards balance for redemption. This is a convenient and valuable method for redeeming your rewards.
  • Travel: Redeem your rewards for travel through the Chase Travel Center for flights, hotels, cruises or car rentals. While this can be a valuable redemption method, note that you'll need to call the Chase Travel Center to book travel with your rewards.
  • Pay with points (coming soon): Starting in fall 2022, cardholders will be able to pay for all or part of their Instacart purchases using rewards. There will not be a minimum rewards balance for redemption.

Other Instacart Mastercard® benefits

The Instacart Mastercard® does not charge foreign transaction fees, making it a convenient option for those traveling abroad.

Among this card's finest features are the travel and purchase protections afforded to consumers. Cardholders will have access to the following protections:

  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Purchase protection
  • Extended warranty protection
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Roadside assistance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Travel and emergency assistance services

This is substantial insurance coverage, especially for a no-annual-fee card, further increasing its overall value.

Another valuable perk of the Instacart Mastercard® is that it comes with World Elite Mastercard benefits. These include complimentary 24/7 concierge service and access to Mastercard Priceless® Experiences. You'll also get special offers for ridesharing services and online shopping. Taking advantage of these benefits can boost the value of this card significantly.

Drawbacks

  • The 5% cash back on travel only applies to purchases made over the phone through the Chase Travel Center: If earning rewards on travel is paramount for you, know that you'll have to jump through an extra hoop to earn and use your travel rewards. Other Chase credit cards allow you to access Chase's online travel portal, which is much more convenient.

Alternatives to the Instacart Mastercard®

While the Instacart Mastercard® can be a great choice for avid Instacart users, if you'd rather earn rewards with traditional grocery shopping, you may want to consider some alternative options.

Verdict: Top rewards at U.S. supermarkets for an annual fee

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is one of the best credit cards for U.S. supermarkets available. You can earn a whopping 6% Cash Back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), 6% Cash Back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions, 3% Cash Back at U.S. gas stations and on transit (including taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses and more), 1% Cash Back on other purchases. While this is an extremely lucrative earning rate for supermarkets, the card also offers excellent rewards on everyday spending. On Citibank's Secure Website

Verdict: Automatically rewards you in the category you spend the most in

The Citi Custom Cash℠ Card is unique in that it allows you to automatically earn the most cash back in the category you spend the most in each month, so you're always maximizing your rewards without needing to try. Cardholders can Earn 5% cash back on purchases in your top eligible spend category each billing cycle, up to the first $500 spent, 1% cash back thereafter. How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
