The Iberia Visa Signature® Card is a good card for earning rewards for Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, LEVEL and OpenSkies travel purchases. It also offers one of the best bonuses of any airline credit card. However, if you are in the market for a general travel card, then you should consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, as it gives cardholders more rewards redemption options, especially for domestic air travel.

Review: Our Thoughts on the Iberia Visa Signature® Card

The main draw of the Iberia Visa Signature® Card is its high 4.5% rewards redemption rate for travel purchases through Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, LEVEL and OpenSkies. This is better than you can get with many of the best airline credit cards. The drawback is that these rewards are somewhat limited in their redemption options. While this program does let users book flights, hotels and car rentals through a number of partners, it doesn't offer as many options as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, especially for domestic travel.

Good For…

Bad For…
Earning lots of miles for travel spending with Iberia and its travel partners.Flexible rewards redemption.
Substantial introductory spending bonus. The $1,000 discount voucher can only be used on Iberia-operated flights.

The Iberia Visa Signature® Card also comes with a substantial introductory spending bonus, awarding 50,000 Avios for cardholders who make at least $3,000 in purchases within three months of account opening. We value this bonus at $750, which matches the bonus of cards that charge a much higher annual fee, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Furthermore, consumers who can charge at least $10,000 within a year of account opening can earn an additional 25,000 Avios, bringing the total estimated first-year bonus value to $1,125. Travelers looking for an airline card with great short-term rewards won't do much better than the Iberia Visa Signature® Card.

The additional benefits of this card offer good value, but only for those who frequently travel with Iberia. The 10% discount and $1,000 discount voucher for cardholders who spend at least $30,000 in a calendar year can only be used on flights operated by Iberia. If you don't often travel with Iberia directly and you're considering getting the Iberia Visa Signature® Card and redeeming the Avios with Iberia's travel partners, these benefits will be of little value to you.

Bottom Line: The Iberia Visa Signature® Card is a great travel card that's worth getting for its massive bonus alone. It also offers an exceptional rewards rate for travel purchases through Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, LEVEL and OpenSkies. However, if you're looking for a travel card with a lot of flexibility, you should consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

The Iberia Visa Signature® Card comes with a large introductory bonus of 50,000 Avios after spending $3,000 within three months of your account opening. Cardholders can earn an additional 25,000 Avios if they reach $10,000 in spending within the first year of account opening. We value the 75,000 Avios that can be earned with both bonuses at $1,125, one of the highest among airline cards.

How Do You Spend Avios?

Avios earned through purchases with the Iberia Visa Signature® Card are transferred to your Iberia Plus account and then can be redeemed for flight bookings, hotel stays and car rentals. They can also be transferred to a British Airways Executive Club account—which also uses Avios as its frequent-flyer currency—as long as both accounts have been active for more than 90 days. While the value you can recoup with your Avios will vary based on how you choose to redeem them, we estimate a single Avios to be worth around 1.5 cents. This means that for purchases on Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, LEVEL and OpenSkies, the Iberia Visa Signature® Card earns 4.5% in rewards value.

Additional Benefits

Cardholders who spend $30,000 or more in a single calendar year can qualify for a $1,000 discount voucher that can be used toward two same-flight, same-class tickets. This voucher can only be used for flights that are operated by Iberia. Discount vouchers can be earned each year cardholders make $30,000 in purchases. They are nontransferable, and the primary cardholder must be traveling on the flight where the voucher is being used. The discount voucher is only valid if used on a qualifying flight taken within 12 months of the date it was issued.

Another valuable benefit the Iberia Visa Signature® Card offers is the 10% discount on Iberia flights. Cardholders can qualify for this discount when they use the Iberia Visa Signature® Card to book flights at iberia.com/chase10. The discount applies only to airfare—taxes and fees are excluded—for up to nine passengers, as long as they're booked on the same flight at the same time.

How Does the Iberia Visa Signature® Card Compare to Other Credit Cards?

When shopping for credit cards, it's important to compare similar offers so you can get a sense of the true value of a card. This also gives you a sense of which features are important and which aren't. Here's how the Iberia Visa Signature® Card compares with other top airline and travel cards.

Iberia Visa Signature® Card vs Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

While the Iberia Visa Signature® Card offers superior rewards-earning potential, it cannot compete with the rewards flexibility of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. This is because the Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can be transferred to a number of different airline and hotel loyalty programs, including Iberia Plus. This means Ultimate Rewards points can be used for everything the Iberia Visa Signature® Card can be used for and more. If you are looking you a general use travel card, then the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is right for you. However, if you often fly with Iberia and can take advantage of the 10% discount on Iberia flights, then the Iberia Visa Signature® Card is the better card for you.

Highlights

  • Earn 2 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
  • Points are transferable to many leading airline and hotel loyalty programs, including Iberia Plus.
  • Get 60,000 bonus points for making $4,000 in purchases within three months of your account opening.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
