"An excellent no annual fee hotel rewards credit card."

Contents

The Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express is one of 4 credit cards tied to the Hilton HHonors™ loyalty program, with 2 cards from American Express and the other 2 offered by Citi. We reviewed the credit card and how it compares to the other Hilton card offerings as well as other travel rewards credit cards to help you decide if it is the right option for you.

Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express: Is It Worth It?

As a no annual fee credit card, the Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express is probably best suited as a supplemental credit card. Use the card to earn the signing bonus and keep it around for those times when you'll be staying at a Hilton resort, or can leverage any of the other bonus spending categories. As an everyday card, the rewards on non bonus spending are not lucrative enough to warrant making it the first card in your wallet. Many of the best no annual fee cash back credit cards like the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card or Fidelity Investment Rewards will get you better rewards rates and offer you cash back which is much more valuable than loyalty points.

Even as a supplemental card it may make sense to consider one of the HHonors™ credit cards with annual fees, provided that you spend a significant amount at HHonors™ properties. The extra rewards you'll earn will be more than worth the fees you pay.

How Does It Fare Against The Other HHonors Credit Cards?

Among the two no annual fee Hilton Credit Cards, the other being the Citi Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature, we think that this American Express offering is clearly the superior of the two. While both card are decent as supplemental credit cards, the American Express has higher rewards in just about every category making it the better choice.

With the Amex version, cardholders receive 7 HHonors™ Bonus points for each dollar when paying for purchases at Hilton resorts vs the 6 you would receive with the Citi. This card also offers 5 points per dollar anytime you spend money at US supermarkets, restaurants or gas stations. The Citi card only gives 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets drugstores and gas stations.Currently, the Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express also comes with a higher bonus, so you can see why we think the American Express option is the better of the two.

The one feature that the Citi card does have is an automatic upgrade to Silver Status with the HHonors™ program but it's probably not valuable enough to be a difference maker. Consumers that may be looking to earn points for a big upcoming trip could consider getting both cards in order to earn both signing bonuses, equating to 80,000 HHonors™ points overall. Otherwise, over the long haul you'll do better by sticking with the Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express.

How About The Other HHonors™ Credit Cards?

At the other end of the spectrum are the Citi HHonors Reserve and the American Express Honors™ Surpass, both cards that come with annual fees. These two more expensive options offer better spending rewards and bonuses all around so if you're using the cards significantly they'll be more rewarding. The downside is that both cards have an annual fee that eats into their value, so they make a lot less sense as a card for occasional use.

Unfortunately with the premium HHonors™ credit cards the major difference in spending rewards is only when it comes to purchases made for HHonors™ stays. We estimate that you'll have to spend at least $10,000 annually at HHonors™ related properties to make it a better option than the no fee card. If you're only the occasional traveler this probably doesn't make sense.

For business travelers that find themselves frequently on the road and are already HHonors™ members, it can make sense to opt for these more expensive cards.
