The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express isn’t one of our favorite business cards for travel. It does, however, have redeeming features, such as a relatively low annual fee and a solid welcome bonus. If you’re interested in maximizing travel rewards, several other business credit cards offer great travel rewards at a similar cost. That said, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express could be a decent option if you’re looking for a card with tools and features to help you manage your business expenses. This card is a great option if you fly Delta throughout the year.

Review: Our Thoughts on the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express

The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express offers an adequate welcome bonus at a low annual fee, but it's not a great travel card for businesses. The main drawback of the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is that the card doesn’t offer great ongoing rewards beyond the initial welcome bonus. If you’re looking for a credit card to maximize travel rewards, you should be looking at the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, or the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card instead. These cards boast unique rewards that we discuss further below.

Good For…Bad For…
A business that travels exclusively with DeltaA business owner looking to maximize travel rewards
Managing and tracking credit card spendingA business with large expenses

The miles offered for direct purchases made with Delta with this credit card are pretty typical for airline cards. If you book flights with airlines other than Delta, your purchases would go further on other business travel cards.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a low cost business credit card with some travel benefits through Delta, this could be a decent option for you. However, if you’re looking for a credit card specifically for travel rewards, there are other options to consider.

Miles earned with the card don’t expire and cardholders also have the benefit of a free checked bag. Typically, Delta charges its customers $25 per checked bag. This means that cardholders can enjoy up to $50 in savings when using their Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express for round-trip airfare. Up to nine additional cardholders can also receive this benefit if they're traveling with main cardholder.

Other Travel Perks

Beyond the miles that can be earned with Delta, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express offers its users a variety of other travel perks. For instance, you can receive in-flight savings of 20% as a statement credit when you use your card to purchase in-flight food or drinks. Additionally, cardholders are automatically assigned a Zone 1 priority, meaning that you're one of the first to board. Similar to the checked bag perk, up to nine additional cardholders can receive this benefit when traveling with the main account member. Delta currently charges customers $15 for priority boarding.

The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express also offers its cardholders discounted access to the Delta Sky Club. This reduced fee means you pay $29 per person to access the Delta Sky Club. The single visit pass rate for the Delta Sky Club is currently $59, so cardholders get a $30 discount. You can bring up to two guests, but they will also have to pay the discounted rate of $29 per person.

What Are Delta SkyMiles Worth?

The value of a Delta SkyMile for a seat in the main cabin on a round trip flight is worth 1.3 cents. To calculate the value of a Delta SkyMile we gathered prices for popular flights using dollars and miles. We then divided the dollar value of each itinerary by the number of SkyMiles required to fly the same route to arrive at a value for a SkyMile. Dozens of itineraries were then averaged to come to one consensus value.

The value of a SkyMile changes based on a multitude of factors including the originating flight location, destination location, seat type, day of the week, length of your travel, etc. For instance, we found that traveling Friday to Sunday yielded a lower average SkyMile value when compared to flying Monday to Friday during the same week.

Interestingly, we found Delta SkyMiles to be higher in value when used to book international travel. While we value a Delta SkyMile at 1.3 cents, that doesn’t mean you can’t get more or less than that value when booking your travel. You should shop around for different seats, dates, and times—if possible—when redeeming your SkyMiles for a flight. Below, we list the results for the cost of some popular routes in dollars and SkyMiles for comparison purposes.

How Does the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express Compare to Other Credit Cards?

As previously mentioned, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express isn’t our preferred credit card for travel. However, it's helpful to compare it to other cards that also offer travel rewards. Here are three popular travel cards.

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express vs Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is a solid credit card if your business has large expenses or values airline status. The main difference between the two cards is the annual miles bonus available on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, which gives cardholders the ability to earn 10,000 bonus miles after spending $25,000 on eligible purchases, and an additional 10,000 bonus miles after spending a total of $50,000 on eligible purchases with the card in the same year. Given that we value SkyMiles at 1.3 cents per mile, the value of the 20,000 available bonus miles is $260, which is more than the $195 annual fee (See Rates & Fees) on the credit card.

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is also great for travelers who enjoy having airline status—due to the ability to earn Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs). Members also receive one companion certificate per year that can be redeemed for one round-trip domestic flight. This benefit can be worth hundreds of dollars to business owners who book flights with multiple people.

Highlights

  • Earn 10,000 MQMs and 10,000 bonus miles after you spend $25,000 on eligible purchases.
  • Earn an additional 10,000 MQMs and an additional 10,000 bonus miles after you spend $50,000 on eligible purchases on your card in the same year.

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express vs Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card

The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is a top option for business owners that are interested in flexible travel rewards and have varied business expenses in categories outlined in the highlights section below. If your business flies with multiple airlines you’ll have more point redemption options through the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. However, if your business always flies with Delta, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card doesn't provide you with certain brand-specific perks. You won’t get free checked bags, discounts on in-flight meals and drinks, or discounted Delta Sky Club access. If you travel with Delta once a month, the value of the checked luggage perk alone ends up being $600 per year.

While you won’t earn two points on all direct Delta purchases, you can earn three points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent on certain categories mentioned below with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. Therefore, if your expenses are varied and you spend less than $150,000 in travel, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card provides greater value.

Highlights

  • Three points per dollar spent on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, internet, cable and phone services, and on advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year.
  • 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months after account opening, which is equivalent to $1,000 in travel rewards.
  • No foreign transaction fees.

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express vs Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card

We recommend getting the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card over the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express if you books hotels with SPG or Marriott Rewards properties often, or if you want flexible redemption options. Businesses that spend more money booking rooms at these properties than booking Delta flights are better served by the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card. Furthermore, the points you earn with the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card can be transferred to several airlines.

Highlights

  • 6 points for each dollar spent at participating SPG and Marriott Rewards hotels.
  • 4 points at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers, and on U.S. purchases for shipping.
  • 2 points on all other eligible purchases.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates are ValuePenguin's alone and for illustrative purposes only. The estimates are not a guarantee, agreement, or commitment to redemption amounts and may not have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
