Frontier Airlines World MasterCard

Note: this credit card offer is no longer available on ValuePenguin.com

Frontier Airlines offers two credit cards issued by Barclays and MasterCard: a fee version, and a no-fee version. The fee version is a good credit card for frequent flyers of Frontier Airlines and active members of Frontier's rewards program, Early Returns, to consider. The no-fee version pales somewhat in comparison. To read more about the Barclays and Frontier Airlines offer, jump to each section below:

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Frontier Airlines World MasterCard Benefits & Rewards (with fee)

How do I earn rewards or miles with Frontier Airline's credit card? The fee version of Frontier Airlines' credit card gives you accelerated earning potential with a nice signing bonus upfront. You earn twice the miles when paying for Frontier flights on FlyFrontier.com, and one mile for each dollar of regular spending swiped. The increased earning power comes with an annual cost of $69. This time, Frontier and Barclays are promoting the credit card with an offer of 40,000 miles for the first $500 of spending in the first three months, and up to 10,000 more miles for balance transfers (each dollar ported is a mile). In other words, this bonus promotion gets you about two round-trip domestic Frontier Airlines flights, or two round-trip and one one-way tickets (if you're moving your balances) redeemed under EarlyReturns for free!

Miles get posted at the end of each billing cycle based on the net purchases made during that month. Barclays requires at least one purchase or balance every six months to keep the account open and the miles earned active.

There's a signup offer of 10,000 bonus miles from Frontier Airlines for the first purchase on the credit card (no time or spending threshholds specified) or balance transfer. 10,000 miles is the equivalent of a one-way ticket in Frontier Airlines' EarlyReturns program.

Frontier Airlines Credit Card Reward Redemption

Miles earned on the Frontier Airlines MasterCard can be redeemed for award travel, donations to charities and non-profit organizations, rental cars, magazine subscriptions, and select entertainment, hotels, and transportation. You can convert your miles to donations for seven charitable organizations, including the Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. Frontier Airlines has partnerships with Avis, Hertz, and National to translate your miles into car rental awards. As for lodging, EasyReturn miles can be converted into nights and stays at the Radisson family of hotels. Cardmembers who live in the Denver area can also enjoy savings at the Denver Zoo with their EasyReturn miles. Up until the end of March 2014, cardmembers also have the option of redeeming their miles for tickets on Amtrak.

Redeeming Award Travel on Frontier Airlines

One of the nice things about Frontier Airlines is their lower round-trip miles requirements, as Base, Ascent, and Summit members of Frontier's EarlyReturns program know. Most other airlines typically require 25,000 miles to redeem a round-trip flight, but at Frontier, that threshhold starts at 20,000 EasyReturn miles in your account (domestic + Alaska). Miles can be redeemed either online or over the phone, although award travel reserved over the phone incurs a $10 reservation service fee. Note also that each redemption can incur the standard taxes and governmental / TSA fees beginning from $5. All examples below assume Frontier's Standard Award redemption levels (not Choice Award).

We'll walk through a couple of scenarios to illustrate the worth of the miles you earn from the Frontier Airlines credit card: a last-minute booking, travel for the holidays, and a year in advance. Frontier is a low cost carrier with a hub based out of Denver. We'll use Denver as either the start or ending destination in our sample routes below to calculate the value of a Frontier World point.

Roundtrip flights from Denver to New York City's LaGuardia Airport cost $218, booked one month in advance, and are also available as award flights by redeeming 20,000 miles. The redemption rate, or return, would therefore be $218 / 20,000 = 1.1%. That's the equivalent of 1.1 cent on the dollar. For the same number of miles and window of time, another roundtrip flight is available from Los Angeles LAX to Denver for about $209. $209 / 20,000 miles would be a return of 1.05%, or about the same as a cent on a dollar.

Ultimately, value on the Frontier Airlines credit card will be maximized with routes that cost more, but still require 20,000 miles. The actual redemption value cardmembers will see depends on seat availability, pricing, dates, and other factors.

Redeeming EarlyReturns Miles for Magazines

Frontier partners with MagsforMiles for smaller awards starting at 600 miles. A 53-issue subscription to Time magazine costs $30, but can be redeemed with 1,500 EarlyReturns miles, which is a return of 2%.

Review: Is the Frontier Airlines credit card worth it?

How often do you fly Frontier Airlines? Are you based in Denver, or do you make a lot of trips to the city?

The $69 fee credit card: If you fly Frontier frequently, or an Ascent / Summit EarlyReturns member, or are based in a hub city such as Denver, then the Frontier World MasterCard from Barclays is a good option for you to consider. By earning miles for Frontier flights twice as quickly, you can accumulate value faster and combine them with your existing Ascent and Summit miles. There are no special privileges accorded to cardmembers, like some of the other airlines' credit cards have.

The no fee credit card: Frankly, the earnings and value rate on the no fee Frontier MasterCard are low compared to stronger credit cards out there. If you fly Frontier frequently, or are an Ascent or Summit you're better off springing for the fee-version of the MasterCard as the accelerated earnings power can make up for the $69 fee. If you're a casual Frontier flyer, or a Base EarlyReturns member, than our opinion is that other general purpose travel credit cards like the Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard® (fee version / no fee version) - one of our best travel credit cards - make more sense for you.
