We've used sample annual auto insurance premiums submitted to the the Maryland Insurance Administration for Elephant Auto Insurance, GEICO, and Allstate to give consumers a sense of how Elephant's insurance rates compare. Both Elephant and GEICO are online and direct-to-consumer auto insurers, while Allstate employs insurance agents in addition to an online marketplace. GEICO generally was the cheapest out of the three, with the exception of the married male and female couple driver. In this instance, Elephant was the cheaper insurer by $152 a year. In absolute value, Allstate was the most expensive company, although for a few hundred dollars more compared to Elephant, consumers could get the guidance and advice of an experienced auto insurance agent, and a personal relationship along with a policy.

These are just three examples of the auto insurers we've chosen at random as a sample comparison for consumers. To see which of the companies are underwriting in your specific city, enter your zip code below to begin your own comparison:

Elephant Auto Insurance Policy & Coverage

GAP Coverage: Loan / Lease Payoff

In addition to the typical types of auto insurance coverage, Elephant also provides protection for so-called underwater car loans, where the value of a car is less than the balance of the loan amount. This is helpful when an accident or event depreciates the value of a car, but the payments you make on the underlying asset are still overvalued. Elephant only provides this coverage after both comprehensive and collision insurance have been purchased, and for cars whose loans are held by banks.

Claims Process & Repair Assistance

Elephant insureds can choose to have their damaged vehicles repaired at any auto body shop, but for those who don't have a preference or don't know of any repair shops, the company has a list of pre-qualified recommendations you can choose from. You're under no obligation to have the car repaired with them, though, as Elephant can simply issue a claims settlement check directly to you.

Geography of Operations

While the company just started out in America in 2009, Elephant has its roots in the Admiral Group, one of the United Kingdom's largest insurers. Here in the States, it underwrites car insurance in four states: Illinois, Maryland, Texas, and Virginia.

Insurer Ratings

Metric Rating
AM Best Financial Strength Rating (2013) Not Yet Rated
Better Business Bureau Rating (2014) A-
NAIC Complaint Index (2012) 2.23 (Worse than Average)

Elephant Auto Insurance underwrote $47MM of private passenger car insurance, which accounted for a 0.03% market share in the United States. However, its share of complaints was roughly twice as large, at 0.08%. Most complaints originated in Maryland, with a small handful distributed across the other states that Elephant operates in. Complaints centered around underwriting type issues, such as policy cancellations and surcharges. Fortunately, most of these reached a compromised and negotiated settlement per the NAIC.

About the Elephant Auto Insurance Company

The Elephant Auto Insurance company started operating in the United States in 2009 as a subsidiary of the Admiral Group, an insurance company based in the United Kingdom. Elephant's headquarters are based in the Greater Richmond, Virginia, in Henrico County's Innsbrook area. The company employs about 300 people as of 2013, and operates on a direct-to-consumer business model (no independent agents) in order to pass savings to customers.

Other vehicles insured by Elephant are ATVs, collector cars, and motorcycles. In addition to car insurance, the Elephant Insurance company also sells property insurance for homeowners, renters, and condo owners.

Fun fact: its mascot's name is Ellie. The elephant theme permeates the culture of the company, with its management team referred to as the "herd", and its charitable affiliations with wild animal and elephant conservation groups such as Tusk. Elephant's customer service telephone number also incorporates this theme: (877) 21-TRUNK.
