Is the eBay Mastercard worth it?

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card is worth it for people who regularly buy and sell on eBay. The card offers a great earning rate on eBay purchases as well as on gas, restaurants and groceries. However, those points can only be used toward eBay purchases and related taxes and shipping fees. In order to redeem your rewards, you'll need to have accrued at least 1,500 points, which will equate to $10 to be used toward eBay purchases. With these restrictions in place, this card's redemption options will really only be valuable for people who constantly use eBay.

For those who use the service infrequently or not at all, the eBay Mastercard Credit Card will not be worth it. Instead, consider another retail credit card, like the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card card or a cashback card like the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. These types of cards don't limit your rewards redemption options to eBay alone, and cashback cards allow you to spend your rewards any way you want.

Who is the eBay Mastercard Credit Card best for?

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card is best for people who constantly use eBay to buy and sell products. This credit card's rewards structure exclusively benefits eBay users, so if you never or rarely shop on eBay, you won't benefit much from this card.

Annual fee

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card does not charge an annual fee, which is a nice perk for frequent eBay consumers who can benefit from this card but don't want to pay annually to own it.

Earning rate

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card allows cardholders to Earn 3X points per $1 spent up to $1,000 on eBay in a calendar year, earn 5X points for the rest of the year after you spend $1,000 on eBay in a calendar year, earn 2X points per $1 spent on gas, restaurant, and groceries, earn 1X points per $1 spent on all other Mastercard purchases.
ice

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card allows cardholders to Earn 3X points per $1 spent up to $1,000 on eBay in a calendar year, earn 5X points for the rest of the year after you spend $1,000 on eBay in a calendar year, earn 2X points per $1 spent on gas, restaurant, and groceries, earn 1X points per $1 spent on all other Mastercard purchases.

double"}

In order to activate the higher earning rate of 5X points per dollar, you need to spend significantly on eBay, so only the most avid eBay users will really be able to benefit from this earning rate level.

The card's other rewards leave a lot to be desired. The 2X points per dollar spent on gas, restaurants and groceries seems comparable to other cards that offer 2% back in various categories (like the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card). However, the card's points are only worth $0.007 each, so you're actually getting a lower return than 2% back in these categories.

Not to mention, there are several cards out there like the Wells Fargo Active Cash℠ Card that let you Earn unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases and are far more flexible on how you redeem your rewards.

Redeeming rewards

Unfortunately, cardholders are restricted to redeeming their points for eBay purchases and any related taxes and shipping fees. This could be a serious drawback if you don't make frequent purchases on eBay, especially since points expire in 24 months.

On the bright side, cardholders only need a minimum of 1,500 points to redeem them. Your 1,500 points can be redeemed for $10, which can be applied to your eBay purchases during checkout. Partial redemptions for amounts less than $10 are also allowed.

Security features

Identity Theft Resolution

With the eBay Mastercard Credit Card, cardholders can feel confident that their personal information is protected 24/7 with identity theft resolution. You will be alerted immediately via email if your identification has been compromised and a team of identity theft resolution specialists will help resolve your issue right away.

Zero-Liability Protection

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card comes with zero-liability protection. If you suspect any fraudulent or unauthorized activity on your account, call the number on the back of your card for immediate assistance.

Priceless Cities

The eBay Mastercard Credit Card offers its cardholders exclusive access to special events and unique experiences in cities worldwide. A special perk of Mastercard, Priceless Cities includes priority access to world class events, exclusive culinary experiences, access to sports games, concerts and more.

Drawbacks

 • Limited redemption options — The eBay Mastercard Credit Card only lets users redeem their rewards for eBay purchases and related taxes and fees. As such, only avid eBay users will get much value from this card.
 • There are a number of additional redemption restrictions — In addition to only being able to redeem your rewards for eBay purchases, you also have to wait to redeem your rewards until you've accrued at least 1,500 points. Also, your points will expire if not used within 24 months.
 • No intro 0% APR offer — The eBay Mastercard Credit Card doesn't offer any introductory APR offer which can give users a bit of wiggle room for paying off their card. While we do always recommend paying off your card on time and in full each month, an introductory APR offer can be useful for consumers who tend to carry a balance.
 • Not valuable for infrequent eBay users — As the rewards structure for this card is specific to eBay redemptions, those who don't use eBay often won't find it very useful.

How does the eBay Mastercard Credit Card compare to competitors?

eBay Mastercard Credit Card vs. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

Verdict: More versatile earning and redemption options

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card card doubles as a retail and cashback card. The card offers 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market with an eligible Prime membership, 2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores and 1% back on all other purchases.

Some of these earning categories overlap with the eBay Mastercard Credit Card. However, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card offers more flexible cash back that you can put toward any purchase, including your eBay spending.

Should you get the eBay Mastercard Credit Card?

You should only get the eBay Mastercard Credit Card if you use eBay enough to take advantage of its rewards. Because you need to earn at least 1,500 points in order to redeem your rewards, you'll need to make sure you're making purchases on eBay regularly enough for the card to be worth it.

However, the card does offer a high earning rate which makes it easier to rack up enough points for redemption, but you'll still need to be a pretty avid eBay user regardless. If you rarely or never make purchases on eBay, you should not get the eBay Mastercard Credit Card, but should consider another retail or cashback credit card instead.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
