The Disney Premier Visa® Card, a card which has recently gotten a lot of press coverage due to its Star Wars makeover, is unfortunately quite underwhelming. Though it offers competitive rewards rates on gas, grocery and dining purchases (2%), the card’s $49 annual fee makes it a hard sell, especially when compared against most cash back credit cards. If you’re interested in the card’s Disney Perks (such as the 10% discount or Meet ‘N’ Greets), know that you can get the same benefits with the Disney Rewards Visa with no annual fees.
Review: Do Dreams Come True With the Disney Premier Visa® Card?
When it comes to day-to-day spending, the Disney Premier Visa® Card doesn’t do anything that a decent cash back credit card, such as the Citi® Double Cash Card or Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card, doesn’t do better. This card does offer interesting and unique features to cardholders – but only those who are devoted Disney fans, or parents of children raised on Disney. If you travel to Disney theme parks once every one or two years, then some of this card’s side benefits may be worth your time.
If you're only after maximizing your net rewards, and use the Disney Premier Visa® Card to only pay for grocery, dining, and gas purchases, it can outperform some of the top cash back credit cards (though not all). The moment you begin using this card to pay for other items, however, this advantage will degrade, as you begin losing out on the potential value that could have been gained through other fixed rate cards.
The rewards earned through this card can be ultimately used in one of two ways: at Disney locations, or to pay off airline ticket charges on your credit card bill. When it comes to the latter, there are travel rewards credit cards that will do a better job. For instance, for just $46 more annually, you can get the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card, which will give you the same 2% rewards rate on most purchases.
The best features of the Disney Premier Visa® Card are things like private Meet ‘N’ Greets, and the 10% discount on select Disney purchases. However, if you instead get the Disney Rewards® Visa® Card (which has a $0 annual fee), you get access to these same benefits. The only thing you’d be giving up with the no-annual-fee variant is half the welcome bonus and the 2% rewards rate – two features that you can easily supplement by applying for another card.
Bottom Line: We’d recommend most consumers stay away from the Disney Premier Visa credit card; we'd point consumers to the no-annual-fee version (the Disney Rewards Visa for its perks), or other travel rewards or cash back credit cards for great cash back rewards on more categories of spending.
Disney Premier Visa® Card Benefits & Features
The Disney Premier Visa® Card earns users Disney Dream Reward Dollars®, with every purchase they make. You get 2 Rewards Dollars for every $100 you spend at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and most Disney locations; just 1 Rewards Dollar is awarded for every $100 you spend in all other locations that accept Visa cards.
Once you’ve accumulated at least 20 Disney Dream Reward Dollars®, you can request a Disney Rewards Redemption card, which will allow you to spend those hard earned rewards. That means you must spend at least $1,000 at the 2x category merchants, or $2,000 anywhere else, before you can actually start putting your rewards to use.
You can also redeem your Rewards Dollars towards airline ticket statement credits. This makes the card far more rewarding, and not tied down to the Disney brand. To redeem your rewards in this way, you must accumulate at least $50 worth of Disney Dollars. You also have just up to 60 days after the purchase of your tickets, to apply the statement credits towards it.
The value of 1 Disney Dream Reward Dollar is $1, so at the end of the day you’ll be earning a rewards rate anywhere between 1% and 2% - which is fairly decent.
10% Discount at Disney Store
When you use your Disney Premier Visa® Card to make purchases of $50 or more (pre-tax) at Disney Stores or DisneyStore.com, you are eligible to receive a 10% discount. While this seems like an amazing offer at first, many hot-ticket items are excluded from this benefit. The list below shows some of the items that are not eligible for the discount.
Not Included In The 10% Discount:
- Theme Park Passes
- Disney INFINITY
- Disney Electronics
- CDs, DVDs & Blu-ray
- Video Games
- Art & Collectibles
- Jim Shore, Lenox® , Enesco Busts and Figurines, Olszewski, Precious Moments, and Vinylmation merchandise
- Gift Cards/Gift Certificates
- 3-D Printed merchandise

$100 Disney Gift Card
If you manage to make at least $500 in purchases, within the first 3 months of your account opening, you will receive a complimentary $100 Disney gift card. To qualify, the $500 must be reached through purchases only - balance transfers, cash advances, and fees do not count towards the minimum threshold. Furthermore, if you qualified for this bonus within the last 2 years, you may not be eligible to receive it again.
The value of this bonus is on par with what we've come to expect from the best cash back rewards credit cards - though many of those do not have any annual fee. Some of the best credit cards in the price-range of the Disney Premier Visa® tend to be a little more generous with their welcome bonuses.
Financing Disney Vacation Packages
If you use the Disney Premier Visa® Card to pay for a Disney Vacation package, you will receive 0% APR for 6 months. This can help pay for a vacation over time, without incurring the wrath of interest fees. After the 6 month period, if you have not yet paid off your purchase by this time expires, you will have to pay the card’s regular APR of 15.99% (variable).
In general, it is not the best practice to finance things like vacation packages because of the high interest expense you'd be accumulating. You should be ideally only purchasing them when you have the funds available to pay for it in its entirety. We recommend using this benefit only if you know that you will be able to pay off the purchase completely, any day, and simply want to free up some of your available cash right now, and break up this purchase over time.
The cost of a Disney Vacation Package will differ based on your design. For example, a 7-day package, for a family of 4, with access to all 4 theme parks at a Disney All-Star Resort, runs about $2,216 (not including airfare). Paying this off over 6-months would come out to payments of $369 per month.
Star Wars Perks & Meet ‘N’ Greets
Disney Premier Visa® cardholders have, as one of their perks, access to private locations at Walt Disney World® and Disneyland® Resort where they can meet their favorite Disney characters – away from the general public where these actors are usually crowded.
Beginning the Fall of 2015, these Star Wars characters will enter the fray, which means having a card will allow you to have a more private 1-on-1 with classic figures such as Darth Vader. This Star Wars™ Imperial Meet 'N' Greet will be available only at Disneyland® Park, in California.
In addition to the new Meet ‘N’ Greets, true Star Wars devotees will have the option to outfit their Disney Premier Visa® Card with one of three new designs – Darth Vader, Yoda, or C3-PO/R2-D2 themed. The way a credit card looks should not usually sway you towards getting one, though this is a detail that may be hard to resist for many hardcore fans.
How Does the Disney Premier Visa® Card Compare Against Other Credit Cards?
To get an idea of the true value of the Disney Premier Visa® Card, it’s important to consider other options available to you. Below you’ll find how the Disney Premier Visa® Card stacks up against other credit cards on the market.
Disney Premier Visa® Card vs Disney Rewards® Visa® Card
The Disney Rewards® Visa® Card is the ‘no-annual-fee’ version of the Disney Premier Visa® Card. The two cards differ only in two significant ways. Firstly, with the Disney Rewards® Visa® Card you don’t get any extra points when shopping at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants – the card has a flat 1% rewards rate across all spending. Secondly, the welcome bonus on the card is lower. With the Disney Rewards® Visa® Card you get a $50 Disney Gift Card after your first purchase. Other than that, all the other benefits are the same between the two cards. Since we wouldn’t recommend getting the Disney Premier Visa® Card for its bonus, or its rewards on gas, groceries, and restaurants, the Disney Rewards® Visa® Card is the better choice – you still get the benefits that matter, though you also don’t have to pay an annual fee.
Disney Premier Visa® Card vs Citi® Double Cash Card
If you don’t care about the 10% Disney discount, or the Meet ‘N’ Greet perks, then we recommend going with the Citi® Double Cash Card instead. This Citi® Double Cash Card provides users with 1% cash back on all their purchases, then another 1% back when that thing is paid off. The Disney Premier Visa® only matches that rate on gas, grocery, and restaurant shopping. The one downside with choosing the Citi® Double Cash Card over the Disney Premier Visa® Card is that you’d be giving up on the $100 welcome bonus (there is no such thing on the Citi card) and all the other side benefits associated with it. As far as maximizing rewards from everyday spending is concerned, the Citi® Double Cash Card reigns supreme.
Disney Premier Visa® Card vs Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express
If you’re looking for a card that gives you great rewards on grocery shopping and gas station purchases while having no annual fee, look no further than the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. This card awards 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, on up to the first $6,000 in purchases per year (1% after that), unlimited 2% back at U.S. gas stations, and select U.S. department stores, and 1% back everywhere else. Given that the average annual ‘Food at Home’ budget for U.S. households is $3,977, we doubt many people will go over the limit on that category.
