National Processing can be a good merchant account provider for mid-sized and large businesses. The company has made strides in transparency, disclosing a lot more of their rates and fees. You should still obtain a quote to get a good idea of what the cost would be to your specific business, but we commend National Processing on the fact that it has improved in this regard. Another upside is that the company seems committed to providing business owners with any solutions they may need to make their payment processing work. Otherwise, in general, if your business is just starting out, and processing less than $10,000 per month, we recommend going with Square instead.

Review: Should You Get National Processing For Your Business?
National Processing can be potentially a great credit card processor for your business, but we recommend users obtain a quote from them and compare it against other available options, like Dharma Merchant Services or Square. While National Processing has some very low and affordable rates, you can't know for sure until you obtain a final quote.
|Good For…||Bad For…|
|Mid-to-large sized businesses that need a lot of custom solutions||Businesses processing less than $10,000 per month|
|Both online, mobile and storefront credit card processing|
In our previous review of this company, we noted they had a lack of transparency on their site. Virtually no fee information was disclosed to business owners and potential customers. However, since then, we were contacted by representatives from National Processing who took our comments to heart and made changes to their disclosures. We really like this devotion to providing the best customer experience, and it's something that is very noteworthy about the company. If you visit their website today, their pricing page shows plenty of examples of the types of charges you may face when doing business.
National Processing's size allows them to work with business owners to deliver custom solutions, when needed. If you prioritize this type of benefit over cost, and are less price sensitive, National Processing will work well for you. The company can provide you with things like inventory management, or even a feature that takes a picture of your employee when they enter a sale. They also offer all types of processing solutions, like mobile and virtual, that can work across all business needs.
Bottom Line: We recommend obtaining a quote from National Processing, and talking through with an account representative to see what kind of features they can provide your business. However, don't finalize anything before comparing that quote to what you could be getting from another credit card processor, to make sure you're getting a good deal.
National Processing Benefits, Fees & Features
National Processing allows for the processing of credit, debit and automated clearing house (ACH) payments. If you want to know something more specific about their terms you will need to obtain a quote. We were able to get some general information from a company representative, which is what we based our review on. However, you should know that your actual fees and experiences may vary.
|Available Pricing Plans||Interchange Plus, Tiered|
|Notable Feature||If you process more than $10k/month and National Processing can't beat your rate, they will give you a $500 Visa Gift Card|
National Processing offers interchange plus pricing, if you ask for it. The plans start with a mark up of 0.20% + $0.10 per transaction. This is extremely low, when compared to other interchange plans, but depending on your business, it's possible that the actual fee may be even lower. National Processing also charges a $59.40 annual PCI compliance fee, which is lower than what a lot of other processors tend to charge. On top of all of that, the credit card processing plan comes with a $9.95 monthly fee, bringing your total annual fees to $178.80.
National Processing has a standard 3-year contract, though you can always negotiate different terms. So long as you disclose and inform the processor about your intention to cancel your service, with a 30-day written notice, you can get out of the contract with no fees. However, if you aren't careful about how you go about ending your contract, you may face a fee of around $250.
Beyond the fees, the exact features National Processing provides will depend on what your business needs. Wayne Hamilton, National Processing's CEO, told us the company is willing to work with business owners to figure out what kinds of solutions they need. For example, they can provide POS systems that come with check-in timers for your employees and inventory systems.
How Much Can National Processing Cost Your Business Annually?
We always want to give small business owners an idea of how much a processor will end up costing them once all the fees are tallied. We took the rate advertised by National Processing, 0.20% + $0.10, and modeled the annual cost based on an average interchange fee of 2.2% + $0.22, and an average transaction size of $50. These figures include all monthly, annual PCI and card assessment fees.

How Does National Processing Compare To Other Credit Card Processors?
To get the best value possible, you should always compare multiple options when shopping around for any service. This is why we took a look at how National Processing compares to some of its competitors.
National Processing vs Dharma Merchant Services
Dharma Merchant Services is our favorite processor for mid-to-large sized businesses. You will need to obtain a quote from National Processing to be able to compare it to Dharma from a price standpoint. Based on the information we obtained, Dharma appears to be more expensive in a few spots, including its annual PCI fee. However, the rates and fees we obtained for National Processing are a best-case scenario. That is why it's important for business owners to compare quotes.
One thing we love about Dharma Merchant Services is transparency. This is a point we touched on in our review above. While National Processing has made a lot of improvements towards being more transparent, they haven't still don't hit quite the same level as Dharma. For example, Dharma has built a tool that allows business owners to estimate costs without surrendering any personal information. They then break out the fees based on industry, sales volume, average sale, and card mix.
Dharma Merchant Services Highlights
- One of the best credit card processors around
- Can be more expensive than National Processing for some businesses
- Very transparent; discloses all fees
National Processing vs Square
If you're just starting out and processing less than $10,000 per month, Square will be the better solution for your business. This credit card processor has no monthly fees, no PCI compliance fees, and no other bulky overhead costs. Beyond ordinary card reader and equipment charges, Square costs just 2.75% per swiped transaction -- a simple flat fee that allows you to accurately anticipate the cost of accepting credit cards.
However, the problem with Square is that they can be very unreliable, especially for larger businesses. Square is a merchant aggregator, not a merchant account provider, which means it will make you more prone to having your account be frozen if a suspicious transaction goes through. If you experience any problems, it can also be difficult to get a support representative on the phone. While this is likely to matter less for small businesses that don't have a high volume of customers, any large firm will need the dependability and customer service that National Processing offers.
- No Monthly or Annual Fees
- 2.75% per swiped transaction
- Best suited for small businesses transacting less than $10,000 per month
