Citi ThankYou® Points: What Are They Worth?

ThankYou® Points are the rewards program Citi affiliated credit cards and services use to reward their customers. As a separate rewards system there can often be a lot of confusion as to how credit cards on the ThankYou® system compare to cards provided by other issuers. We take a look at the ways ThankYou® Points can be used to figure out how consumers should value the rewards they've earned with Citi credit cards.

What Are Citi ThankYou® Points Worth?

Citi ThankYou® Points can be redeemed in a number of ways and the dollar value of the points will vary depending on how you choose to use them. To figure out the value of the points we looked at the full range of redemption options for the awards to find out what they can be worth. Because of the high variability in their value, the actual rewards rate for credit cards using ThankYou® Points may not be as lucrative if you're not willing to use them for their best redemption options.

We estimate the average value of Citi ThankYou® Points at .8 cents per point.

Usage

ExampleValue Per Point
Cash Back$50 Cash Back: 10,000 points.5 cents
Gift Cards$25 Best Buy Gift Card: 2,500 points1 cent
Redeem For Flights$450 fare: 45,000 points1 cent
Shopping$829 Apple iPad Mini: 100,000 points.83 cents
Statement Credit$10 Statement Credit: 2,000 points.5 cents
Select And Credit$150 Credit: 20,000 points.75 cents
Amazon$80 purchase: 10,000 points0.8 cents

What Is The Best Way To Use ThankYou® Points?

For most cards the best way to use ThankYou® Points is either by redeeming them for a flight or for gift cards at specific stores. Used in this way, you'll receive 1 cent per point which is the best conversion rate most Citi ThankYou® cardholders can expect. The other uses for points compare pretty poorly, with statement credit and cash back faring the worst giving only half as much value overall.

The Select And Credit Redemption Option

One unique feature of the Citi ThankYou® programs is the Select and Credit feature. Select and Credit works similar to statement credits except they apply only to specific categories: Dining, Entertainment, Utility Bills, Gas, Groceries, Drug Stores. Using the points this way bumps the statement credit value of points significantly netting you .75 cents per point, 50% more than the standard .5 cents.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
