The usefulness and value of the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® depends upon your company’s reliance on American Airlines travel. The list of AA benefits is by far the card's best feature, and helps to make up for the scarcity of useful business-oriented perks and other more well-rounded uses. The reduced mileage awards make the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® worthwhile for any small business that finds themselves flying with American Airlines at least several times per year.
Review: Is the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® the Best Value for your Business?
The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is designed for small businesses that travel a lot with American Airlines. The card’s overall rewards rate is fairly competitive, when matched up against some of the best small-business credit cards. All of the card’s value, however, is tied up with the airline its affiliated with. If you or your employees do not travel with AA at least a couple of times each year then this card is worthless. If you and your employees do not travel at all, the Ink Plus® Business Credit Card might be your best bet. As far as business benefits go, the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is rather poor.
The best and only worthwhile feature of the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is its American Airlines perks. The AA benefits this card provides are the best of any business card we’ve seen. The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is one of the few cards to qualify for AA’s reduced mileage redemptions, which give a 7,500 mile discount each time you book a flight with AAdvantage miles, on select destinations. While these benefits may not seem like a big deal individually, they certainly add up – especially if you or your staff are in the air with either American Airlines on a regular basis.
CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® Benefits & Features
We took an in-depth look at all the benefits and rewards the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® gets you and your company. As expected, most the card’s entire rewards structure is based around the American Airlines partnership - you earn AAdvantage miles. If you have no interest in these types of benefits, we recommend you go with a different card.
Earning AAdvantage Miles Through Spending
Spending in select business categories with the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, will earn you 2 AAdvantage miles per $1. “Business categories” include telecommunications, car rental merchants and at gas stations. In addition to this, any time you pay for American Airlines flights using the card, you will also earn 2 miles per $1. Other charges will earn users just 1 AAdvantage mile per $1.
We calculate the value of an AAdvantage mile to be $0.0135. This figure was derived by averaging several different American Airlines itineraries, and dividing their USD cost by the total AA mile cost. For instance, a roundtrip flight from New York to Denver, on Presidents Day Weekend, can cost $508. That same flight would require 37,500 AAdvantage miles to book. We arrive at a point value through the following calculation: $508 / 37,500 = $0.0135 per point. If your award flight happens to be towards a reduced mileage destination, then your rewards rate will be correspondingly higher.
Introductory Bonus: After making $3,000 in combined purchases, within the first 3 months of opening a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® account, users will receive 50,000 bonus American Airlines AAdvantage miles. Cardholders will receive an additional 10,000 bonus miles after making $10,000 in purchases within the first 12 months of account opening, for a total of 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles.
What are the Benefits of Using the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® for your Company?
All of your employees' spending on their CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® cards will earn AAdvantage miles that will be credited to your main account. The rates at which miles are earned on employee cards are the same as the primary cardholder’s.
All transactions from your employees will count towards the $3,000 bonus requirement. Theoretically, if you don’t spend a dime, but one of your employees charges $3,000 to his card within the first 3 months of the account opening, you will still receive 50,000 miles.

CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® vs Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card
The Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card offers a combination of fantastic rewards and business solutions. If you or your employees travel a lot, and have to book hotel stays often then this card’s rewards are lucrative. We estimate each point you earn with the card to be worth nearly a cent at $0.009. Our estimate is based off of the rewards you can earn through the redemption of your points. Of course, your mileage will vary as it’s possible to achieve lower or higher rewards rates.
Since we estimate each point to be worth $0.009, then that means reserving nights at Starwood Properties earns you a 5.4% rewards rate on each dollar spent (6 points x $0.009). You’ll earn a 3.6% rewards rate on U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers, and on U.S. purchases for shipping (4 points x $0.009). All other spending nets you a 1.8% rewards rate (2 points x $0.009).

CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® vs Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business
The Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business allows its users to earn 2% cash back on all purchases – regardless of category. Small businesses that value flexibility above all else will find this aspect of the card particularly useful. The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® gives you back AA miles, which are only useful whenever you need to fly with American Airlines. On the other hand, the rewards earned through the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business act basically as a 2% rebate on all purchases – most will find cash a lot more useful over just air miles.
