What do you do when your trip to Disney World is cut short by a hurricane or you're never even able to begin it in the first place? The trip cancellation and interruption insurance offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card will reimburse you if a covered loss prevents you from going on your trip, or if it's delayed and you have to pay fees to reschedule your travel dates.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® trip cancellation insurance applies both to you (the cardholder) and your immediate family, even if they're travelling without you—provided you paid for their trip with your card.

What's Covered?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® covers a broad range of perils, so you should check your card's guide to benefits for an exhaustive list. But here are some examples of the types of crises you're covered against.

  • Accidental loss of life, injury or sickness sustained by you, your traveling companion or an immediate family member of yours or your companion's
  • Severe weather, such as a hurricane, that prevents the start or continuation of a covered trip

  • A court subpoena or jury duty order that can't be rescheduled or waived

Coverage Limits

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® trip cancellation and interruption insurance covers you and each of your family members up to $10,000, with a maximum limit of $20,000 per occurrence and a maximum benefit amount of $40,000 per 12-month period.

For example, if your covered family vacation cost $5,000 per person, with four people traveling, you could be reimbursed up to $20,000 for the trip. If you were traveling alone and the trip cost $12,000, you'd only be eligible to receive $10,000 in reimbursement under this policy.

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim?

  • You must notify the travel supplier within 48 hours of receiving medical advice from a physician that you shouldn't travel.
  • You must file a written claim within 20 days after the occurence (or as soon as reasonably possible).
  • You'll receive a claim form when you report your loss. You must submit that completed form with supporting documentation within 90 days from the date of the occurrence (or as soon as reasonably possible) to finalize your claim.

Baggage delay insurance from the Chase Sapphire Reserve® reimburses you for essential purchases you make if your luggage is delayed by more than six hours by a common carrier, such as an airline, bus or cruise ship. Coverage only applies when you've paid for your transportation fare with your eligible Chase card or with Ultimate Rewards points, and you'll only be reimbursed in excess of reimbursement provided by your separate travel insurance policy or reimbursement from the carrier responsible for the delay—meaning you can't double dip in reimbursements.

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim?

  • You must report the loss or damage to the airline, bus company or other travel carrier immediately after exiting it, and you'll need to provide Chase with proof of that report to continue your claim.
  • Within 20 days of the incident (or as soon as reasonably possible), you'll need to file a written claim. After you do, you'll receive a claim form that must be completed and submitted within 90 days of the incident (or as soon as reasonably possible).

Usually, when renting a car, the rental company will offer you a collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW) at the rental counter. This waiver relieves you of financial responsibility for damage done to the vehicle while it's in your possession, and it typically costs about $9 to $19 per day. But if you decline this waiver and pay for the entire rental with your Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, Chase may help cover the loss.
