Review: Our thoughts on the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card

Regardless of what your business is, chances are you’ll face tons of operating expenses. From advertising and marketing expenses to office supplies, there’s no shortage of purchases you could be earning rewards on. Compared to other business cards out there, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card wins for its fantastic sign-up bonus and solid rewards rate on various purchase categories.

Cardholders will Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That is worth approximately $1,000 toward travel rewards when redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. If you qualify for this bonus, it’s enough to cover your annual fee for well over 10 years.

However, you should always weigh the opportunity cost of your card choice. If you want to avoid an annual fee altogether, you can still apply for a business credit card with no annual fee with a moderate sign-up bonus instead. Depending on your company’s expenses, the no-fee option may be better or worse.

Bottom line: The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is best for companies that spend a lot on travel, shipping, internet, cable and phone services and social media/search engine advertising each year. If your business expenses don’t fall in these bonus categories, or you have a marginal number in expenditures each year, you’re better off applying for a business card with no annual fee.

Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card benefits and features

Beyond the short-term value of a high sign-up bonus, we take a more in-depth look into the benefits and features of the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. It’s a well-rounded card, and most companies should benefit from its rewards structure and its business management tools.

Earning rewards

The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card's users Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases—with no limit to the amount you can earn.

Since we value Ultimate Rewards points at roughly $0.0125 each, our estimated return for this card is between 1.25% to 3.75%. If your business can reach this $150,000 spending limit annually, you’re potentially looking at more than $5,000 in returns from the bonus category alone.

Redeeming rewards

The flexibility of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program is a huge selling point for the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. For simplicity’s sake, you can redeem your points for cash back, gift cards or Apple purchases.

But if you’re looking to get a better value from your hard-earned rewards, you’ll want to redeem your points for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards to earn a 25% bonus. For example, the card's sign-up bonus is worth $1,250 toward travel expenses. You’ll be able to use your points on most rental cars, hotel stays and flights — offering a ton of savings opportunities on business travel.

You can also transfer your Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to 14 loyalty programs — 11 airline and three hotel partners. These partners include some popular domestic airlines, such as Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, as well as many international options:

How does the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card compare to other business credit cards?

Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card vs. Ink Business Cash® Credit Card

Excellent

  • Earn $750 bonus cash back after you spend $7,500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening
  • Earn 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year
  • Earn 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year. Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • With Fraud Protection your card transactions will be monitored for possible signs of fraudulent activity using real-time fraud monitoring
  • With Zero Liability you won't be held responsible for unauthorized charges made with your card or account information
  • No Annual Fee
  • Redeem rewards for cash back, gift cards, travel and more through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 0% introductory APR for 12 months on purchases

Chase’s no-annual-fee option — the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card — may be a better fit for businesses with relatively low expenses. Having a $0 annual fee means you never have to worry about this card being a net loss in terms of rewards. You’ll Earn 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year. Earn 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year. Earn 1% cash back on all other card purchases with no limit to the amount you can earn.

While these limits are significantly lower than what we see on the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, it may suit many smaller businesses needs’ better. Simultaneously, the points you earn with the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card cannot be transferred to travel partners — one of the most valuable redemptions that can be made with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. Instead, you can redeem your Ultimate Rewards points for cash back, gift cards and more. This card’s sign-up bonus allows you to Earn $750 bonus cash back after you spend $7,500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

Some businesses could even apply to both cards, allowing you to optimize your rewards. By using the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card at office supply stores, gas stations and restaurants and the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card on everything else, you can combine the points earned for even better rewards rates.

Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card vs. American Express® Business Gold Card

The American Express® Business Gold Card competes with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card’s offerings: You’ll Get 4X Membership Rewards® points on the 2 select categories where your business spent the most each month*. It’s a Business Gold perk that does the extra work for you. These categories include:

  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • U.S. purchases made directly from select technology providers of computer hardware, software and cloud solutions
  • U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery
  • U.S. purchases for shipping

Like the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, these bonus points are capped at the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these two categories each calendar year. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar. You’ll earn Membership Rewards points that can also transfer mostly at a 1:1 ratio to American Express’ travel partners.

Most people will likely choose the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card over the American Express® Business Gold Card, as the annual fee is almost three times as high ($295). Additionally, the American Express® Business Gold Card comes with a lower welcome offer: Earn 70,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $10,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.* However, since this spending limit is lower, the American Express® Business Gold Card’s welcome offer may be more attainable for most small businesses.

ValuePenguin’s verdict

Out of all the options available, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card will provide extraordinary value for most businesses out there. It’s a well-rounded card offering an excellent sign-up bonus and bonus points on common purchase categories. How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
