Contents

The Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card is only worthwhile if you can take advantage of the many bonuses and discounts it offers, and if you take a Celebrity, Azamara, or Royal Caribbean cruise at least once per year. Otherwise, consumers would be better off choosing a 2% cash back credit card, or a travel credit card.

Review: Is the Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card Worth It?

The Celebrity Cruises credit card has the potential to be a very lucrative credit card, but only for a select few individuals who can make full use of all its benefits. These are individuals who travel with Celebrity Cruises at least once per year, and regularly purchase premium beverage and specialty dining packages. The discounts this card provides on these items (which we explain in greater detail here), have the chance to make paying the card’s $69 annual fee worthwhile. On top of these, as long as you spend at least $10,000 annually on the Celebrity Cruises credit card, you will also awarded 10,000 MyCruise points each of those years.

Individuals who are big spenders – making $27,500+ in non-cruise purchases each year – will be better off with a card that provides a flat fixed rewards rate on all purchases. In this case, cards such as the Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer or the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® will be among the best choices. For high spenders, these cards will produce rewards that, in the long-term, will provide a better value – even when you consider the additional bonuses of the Celebrity card, which can be used as $100 in onboard credit.

Bottom Line: There are very few individuals who will find the offer of the Celebrity Credit Card worthwhile. Furthermore, the MyCruise Points you earn through this card can only be used to provide discounts on future cruises, or onboard credit – a reward with far less flexibility than most.

Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card Benefits & Features

The Celebrity Cruises credit card awards users 2 MyCruise points per $1 spent on qualifying Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and Azamara purchases, and 1 point per $1 on everything else. These rewards points are valued at about $0.01 each, making the rewards rate on the card fall between 1% and 2%, depending on how your spending breaks down. Because the instances where you’ll be earning 2% are fairly restricted, overall this card’s rewards rate is subpar. The points themselves can be used as onboard credit, discounts towards cruises, and stateroom upgrades.

  • 2 MyCruise Points per $1 on qualifying Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and Azamara purchases
  • 1 point per $1 on all other purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees for non-US transactions

If you make a purchase using the Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature card, within the first 65 days of opening your account, you will receive an additional 10,000 bonus points. Subsequently, every year in which make at least $10,000 in purchases onto your credit card, you will receive another 10,000 points. The value of this reward is $100. It’s more than enough to cover the card’s $69 annual fee, and then some. However, you must commit to spending a decent amount of money on the credit card, which might could be better spent with a different card

$300 Discount Off a Future Cruise

Individuals who spend at least $5,000 on their Celebrity Cruises credit card within 60 days of opening their account will receive a $300 discount off a future cruise of at least 7 nights or more in a Concierge Class. Typically, this class is the fourth most expensive. For example, Concierge Class on a 10 night Hawaii Cruise from Vancouver, would cost $2,129 per person. In this instance, the card’s bonus would result in a 14% discount.

The requirements and redemptions for this bonus are more restrictive than most. Spending $5,000 within 60 days may be attainable only for high spenders. By comparison, the bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is worth $625, in travel rewards, and attainable by spending $4,000 in 3 months from account opening – a full 30 days longer than the Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card.

Discounts on Various Cruise Packages

An additional perk of having the Celebrity Cruises credit card is the discount users can get on Premium Beverage (10% off), Specialty Dining (buy one get one 50% off), and Private Journey Packages (10% off).

Beverage packages unlock unlimited access to various drinks, while individuals are on a cruise – this discount applies specifically to either the Premium Packages ($65 per night) or the Premium Non-Alcoholic Package ($22 per night). Estimated value of discount: $15.40 - $45.50 (assuming 7 day cruise).

Specialty dining refers to per-person cover charges individuals can buy towards restaurants on their cruise ship – these vary in in price from around $35 to $60 per person. Estimated value of discount: $30

Private Journeys are special shore experiences that individuals can plan and book once they know which ports they will stop at. Prices for these will vary depending the destination, and what kind of things travellers would like to do. According to Celebrity Cruises representatives, these can reach $1,000 per Journey. Estimated value of discount: $100 (assuming the higher-end of the Private Journey pricing range).

How Does the Celebrity Cruises Credit Card Compare To Other Cards?

Here are some alternatives to the Celebrity Cruises credit card. We go over how these cards compare – in terms of both bonuses, perks, and rewards rates.

Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card vs Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer

The Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer out-preforms the Celebrity Cruises credit card when it comes to rewards gained from day-to-day spending. With the Citi credit card, users get 1% cash back when they make a purchase, and another 1% back when that purchase is paid off. In contrast, the Celebrity credit card only attains a 2% rewards rate on cruise purchases with the affiliated cruise lines. When it comes to bonuses, the Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer fails to impress – offering absolutely nothing.

If you care about the various discounts and bonus miles offered by the Celebrity credit card, and think they are worth the $69 annual fee for you, then you may be left with little choice. Altogether, the long-term bonuses on the Celebrity card come out to be worth $275 at most. Therefore, if you spend at least $27,500 annually on non-cruise items, you will still come out ahead with the Citi® Double Cash Card - 18 month BT offer.

Celebrity Cruises® Visa Signature® Credit Card vs Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® is one of our favorite travel credit cards – due to a flat rewards rate of 2.1% on all purchases. One benefit to having this card, over the Celebrity cruises credit card, is the fact that your rewards can  be used as statement credit – which is much more flexible than MyCruise Points. For this added flexibility, cardholders have to pay a little more per year. The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® comes with an $89 annual fee (waived the first year). In the long-term, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® will always be best for people who spend at least $28,095 on non-cruise expenses.

In terms of bonuses, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® is much more profitable in the short-term. Consumers who spend at least $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months will receive 40,000 bonus miles, which are worth $400 as travel statement credit. That is, however, where the card’s bonus awards end – there are no other mile bonuses awarded in subsequent years. Therefore, consumers who consistently go on at least one cruise per year are sure to get a better value with the Celebrity Cruises credit card – unless they meet the above mentioned spending threshold of $28k per year.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the Rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s sign-up bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool.

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards Value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any sign-up bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card.
