Car Insurance Requirements

The majority of states have a minimum required amount of car insurance and Michigan is no exception. Michigan is also part of a smaller group of states that mandate personal injury protection insurance. Furthermore, it is the only state that mandates drivers also hold personal property insurance (PPI). Below we list all the requirements for car insurance in Michigan

Type of CoverageLimits
Bodily Injury Liability (BI) $20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability (PD) $10,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Unlimited
Property Protection Insurance (PPI) Up to $1 million

Personal Injury Protection

In Michigan, personal injury protection is unlimited. What this means is that your medical bills stemming from a car accident can be whatever price, and your PIP will cover it. If you are disabled in an accident, personal injury protection also covers your lost wages up to a certain amount until you recover. Unfortunately, these benefits makes rates more costly in St. Clair Shores and in the rest of Michigan. To help with pricing, you can coordinate your health insurance with your PIP to reduce your premium. In this case, your health insurance will cover your injures while PIP will continue to pay for lost wages in the event of a disability. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, you will not be able to coordinate the two however.
