Car Insurance Requirements

Michigan is a no-fault state. What that means is all drivers are required to carry personal injury protection (PIP) on their auto policy. Unlike all other states that require PIP however, the coverage is unlimited in Michigan. Drivers are also required to hold personal property insurance (PPI). Below you may see the other minimum car insurance requirements for Michigan drivers

Type of CoverageLimits
Bodily Injury Liability (BI) $20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability (PD) $10,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Unlimited
Property Protection Insurance (PPI) Up to $1 million

Personal Injury Protection

As we mention above, PIP is unlimited in Michigan. If an injury you sustain in a car accidents sends your medical bills into the millions, they will still be covered. If you're forced out of work, the economic loss benefit of PIP will also cover any lost earnings for three years up to a certain amount. If you have health insurance, and want to lower your PIP premium, you may also coordinate your health insurance plan with your PIP. Your health insurance covers your injuries while PIP will continue to pay for lost wages in the event of a disability. Note though, if you have Medicare or Medicaid, you will not be able to coordinate the two.
