The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is an affordable travel rewards card that offers a decent spread of benefits for its $0 intro for first year; $95 after that. It’s a step up from the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card, which carries $0 annual fee, but offers less earning potential and a lower introductory bonus.
Along with unlimited mileage accrual at a generous clip of 2X per dollar spent, without category restrictions or caps, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card also boasts a 50,000 mile sign-up bonus, which you can earn after spending $3,000 within the first three months of account opening, and a suite of features designed to help you save money on both travel-related expenses and everyday purchases. You can use your miles on a wide variety of goods and services at a rate of 1 cent per mile, the industry standard. Miles can also be redeemed for cash value.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card review: An affordable, but valuable travel card
When it comes to choosing a travel rewards credit card, it’s all about weighing the costs and benefits. And when it comes to a mid-tier rewards option—one that does carry an annual fee, but not a particularly outrageous one—the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card has a lot to offer in the way of getting your money’s worth. With the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card, you will get a $0 intro for first year; $95 after that annual fee, an unlimited 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day, as well as travel-specific bonuses, including a $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Miles are easy to redeem with the majority of travel vendors in whichever way you desire, and can also be redeemed for account credits and gift cards.
Along with its travel expense incentives, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card also offers a standard suite of security features, including a few specifically geared toward cardholders on the go. For instance, you’ll have 24/7 access to Travel Assistance Services, which can get you an emergency card replacement and cash advance in the event your card is lost or stolen, as well as travel accident insurance and an auto rental collision damage waiver.
Here are more of our favorite features about the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card.
Easy-to-earn, easy-to-spend miles
While there are countless travel rewards credit cards on the market, not all of them offer cardholders the opportunity to earn miles on every single purchase—especially not at a rate of 2X per dollar.
Miles are fairly flexible and can be transferred to any of Capital One’s 14 travel partners. Current partners include popular and well-regarded airlines such as JetBlue, Air France KLM and Emirates. However, you can also book travel as normal (be it through a third-party website or travel agent) and redeem miles in the form of a statement credit using Capital One’s Purchase Eraser feature. You must use Purchase Eraser within 90 days of the date your travel-related purchase posts to your account.
- 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day
- Redeem miles through Capital One’s Reward Center or via your favorite website or agent – you aren’t limited to a single airline or hotel franchise
Generous and achievable sign-up bonus
If a hefty sign-up bonus is important to you, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card offers a competitive deal: Earn 50,000 Bonus Miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.
Thoughtful travel and shopping features
Earning miles is all well and good, but the true strength of a travel-focused credit card is in the travel-related security and savings features. The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card offers basics (like no foreign transaction fees) as well as peace-of-mind extras like travel accident insurance and an auto rental collision damage waiver.
Of course, these types of features aren’t rare in today’s travel rewards credit card market – but Capital One also includes some unique shopping benefits we haven’t seen in many other places, specifically geared toward saving you money. The bank has partnered with Paribus and Wikibuy to help you find the lowest prices possible whenever you buy online.
Exclusive access and security
As a travel rewards credit card shopper, chances are you’re often looking for adventure—and if you need some additional options, Capital One has your back. Venture Rewards cardholders will gain access to a wide variety of exclusive experiences, including chef-curated dining opportunities, live entertainment with VIP perks and members-only lounges, discounts on major sporting events and more.
You’ll also benefit from a suite of security features that aren’t necessarily specifically related to travel (but can still be serious benefits), such as $0 fraud liability, mobile card lock capability and real-time notifications about suspicious activity.
ValuePenguin's verdict: A solid choice for an amateur traveler
While there are certainly more potent travel rewards cards on the market, many of them carry high annual fees, which may be hard to justify for those who travel a fair amount, but not excessively. However, for leisure travelers who still want to earn rewards while they explore and stack the odds in their favor for saving money on travel-related expenses, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card offers a solid cost-to-benefit ratio, especially since it allows users to accrue miles on everyday purchases at the same rate.
Alternatives to the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card
While the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card strikes a good balance between annual fee and available rewards, there are other competitive rewards credit cards on the market which may better suit your needs.

It carries a $95 annual fee (the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card's $95 annual fee is waived the first year), but its miles earning potential is more limited: 2X points on travel and dining at restaurants & 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases worldwide. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also carries a slightly higher sign-up bonus of 60,000 miles, but requires a $4,000 spend in the first three months to get you there.

If you’re all about the sign-up bonus, this is a travel rewards card that might catch your eye. The American Express® Gold Card offers new cardmembers 35,000 Membership Rewards points as an introductory extra, and you only have to spend $4,000 over the first three months to be eligible. What’s more, you’ll earn miles at an accelerated pace beyond the bonus period: 3X Membership Rewards® points for flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com and 4X points at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per year in purchases, then 1X).
The card also carries some fun and indulgent extras specifically for luxury travelers, including a $100 hotel credit to spend on splurges like resort activities, spa treatments and dining at participating hotel locations. You’ll also get a $100 airline fee credit to cover extras like in-flight meals or checked bags (though you can only use this perk with one qualifying airline of your choice). However, all these perks do come at a cost: the American Express® Gold Card carries an annual fee of $250, significantly more than the other cards listed in this article, and thus may be best used by serious travelers or those who travel frequently for business.
Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card
The annual fee-free version of Capital One’s travel rewards line, the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card offers a lot of the same perks as the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card at a much lower cost. Instead of 2X, however, you’ll earn unlimited 1.25 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day, which is still a pretty good deal for a card with $0 annual fee. If you’re someone who only travels once in a while, but are still interested in lowering your travel-related expenses by using miles, the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card could be the perfect fit.
