The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One is an entry-level credit card that’s marketed as a credit card for college students, but could be a good fit for anyone who has Average/Fair/Limited credit.

With a $0 annual fee and a decent if not spectacular rewards program, the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card is an intriguing option for students or others with limited credit history. The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card also has measures in place to increase your credit limit and report your payment history to the major credit bureaus.

Earn up to 1.25% cash back

With the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card, you earn 1% Cash Back on all purchases; 0.25% Cash Back bonus on the cash back you earn each month you pay on time ( minus any credits or returns).

Note that this does not include items like cash advances, balance transfers and checks used to access your account.

The rewards also incentivize you to pay on time: You'll get a bonus 0.25% (for a total of 1.25%) cash back each billing cycle if your account is not past due. The bonus cash back is generally applied to your rewards balance within two months.

Many cards for first-time cardholders don't offer any sort of cashback rewards program. So from that perspective, the ability to earn 1.25% cash back, especially coupled with the streaming credit, is an attractive offer for a no-annual-fee card.

You don't necessarily need to pay your balance in full in order to qualify for the 0.25% cash back bonus (though it is a good habit to get into) — you’ll just need to make sure you make at least the minimum payment by the due date.

A 1.25% cash back rewards rate on all purchases isn’t the best, but it's also not the lowest. There are other cards that offer either category bonuses or 2% cash back on all purchases, though if you're just starting out and have limited credit history, you may not be able to qualify for those credit cards.

$60 streaming subscription credit

One unique feature of the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card is a $60 streaming subscription credit.

This streaming credit is $5 each month; it’s for new cardholders only and only applicable for the first 18 months of having the card. Accounts in good standing will be eligible after their first on-time monthly payment.

Currently the following streaming subscriptions are eligible for this streaming subscription credit:

  • Amazon Music Unlimited
  • AT&T Now
  • Audible
  • CBS All Access
  • Disney+
  • ESPN+
  • Fubo TV
  • HBO Now
  • Hulu
  • iHeartRadio
  • Kindle Unlimited
  • MLB.TV
  • NBA League Pass
  • Netflix
  • NHL.TV
  • Pandora
  • Prime Video
  • Sling TV
  • SiriusXM Streaming and Satellite
  • Spotify
  • YouTube Music Premium
  • YouTube Premium
  • Google Play Music
  • Youtube TV

Given the prevalence of streaming services, it seems likely that prospective cardholders will be paying for at least one of these streaming subscription services. In that case, this is essentially a free $5 each month.

It's important to note that streaming subscriptions that are billed annually are not eligible for this credit.

Another way to look at it is as additional monthly cash back. If you average spending $500 on your Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card each month, getting $5 extra back is like earning an additional 1% on your purchases. That makes the rewards you can earn on this card even more attractive.

Redeeming cash back

When you're ready to redeem your rewards, you have a few different options:

  • You can get your cash back upon request in the form of a statement credit or a check.
  • You can also set up automatic redemptions preference.
  • You can either redeem your rewards at a set time each year or after reaching a specific threshold ($25, $50, $100, $200, $500 or $1,500).

There’s no cap to the rewards you can earn, and they won’t ever expire as long as you keep your account open; however, if you close your account, you will forfeit any rewards that you haven't yet redeemed.

What credit score do you need to apply for the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One?

The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card is marketed towards students, so it's expected that applicants might have a limited credit history or credit score. Capital One suggests that to be approved for this card, you only need a "Average/Fair/Limited" credit score — that could be a credit score between 520 and 679.

Other Journey Student Rewards from Capital One benefits

In addition to the cash back and streaming subscription rewards, the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card has a few other benefits that are worth mentioning.

If you pay for your car rental with your Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card, you’re eligible for an auto rental collision damage waiver through the Visa Signature program. The coverage is secondary, which means that it only takes effect after your own personal auto insurance and any other applicable insurance is billed. There are some exclusions as well, so make sure you read the fine print to see who and what is covered.

The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card comes with no foreign transaction fees, so you won't be charged any additional fees if you are billed in a currency other than U.S. dollars. As such, it can be a great credit card to use while traveling out of the country.

If you don't have any credit history and/or limited income, it’s likely you're not starting out with a very high credit limit.

However, with the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card, your account is subject to automatic credit line reviews, which can start as soon as six months after opening your account. What this means is that if you’re responsible with your card, Capital One will gradually start increasing the amount of available credit that you have.

CreditWise is Capital One's program to help consumers monitor and understand their credit report and credit score. With CreditWise, you can access information to help you understand how your credit score is calculated, and also get alerted whenever your TransUnion credit report changes. This service can help keep you aware of how inquiries and changes to credit lines or accounts affect your score.

As an important factor for building your credit, Capital One reports your usage and payment history on the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card to the major credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. As long as you pay your credit card statement on time (and ideally in full) each month, this should help improve your credit score.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
