Capital One Credit Card Expert Reviews: Our Thoughts On All Consumer Cards

Capital One currently offers seven different consumer credit cards, many of which may appear to be extremely similar to each other. We performed a deep dive into the terms & conditions, rewards and benefit structures of each card to find out what makes each unique. Below you can find our review of each Capital One credit card and see whether it will work well for what you need.

Capital One Personal Credit Card Reviews

This section contains just a brief rundown of Capital One credit card reviews. Click "Learn More" on any of the cards if you want to see a more in-depth and comprehensive examination of the benefits.

Capital One® Quicksilver® Card

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Card is CapOne’s flagship cash back credit card, and one of the best offers available from this issuer. Users can earn 1.5% cash back on all their purchases no matter the category. This is quickly becoming the standard among mainstream fixed-rate cash back credit cards. However, most credit cards on the market still give just 1% back on generic purchases. If you have varied spending habits, or want a simple everyday credit card this is an excellent option.

Bottom Line: Get this card if you want an easy-to-use credit card with good rewards. If you are a heavy spender or frequent traveler, you would probably do better by picking one of the Venture credit cards.

Select Features
Annual Fee$0
APR14.74% - 24.74% (Variable)
RewardsUnlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase
Bonus$150 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months of approval

Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card is meant to be an alternative to the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card, for consumers with average credit. The features between the two cards are almost identical. You get 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Unlike the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card, the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card has no bonus. The biggest catch, however, is that this card charges a $39 annual fee. If you have an average credit score (which is typically somewhere between 600 and 700), you have plenty of no-fee options to choose from that can give you comparable rewards. Therefore, we generally don't recommend people apply for the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card outside of a few specific circumstances.

Bottom Line: Don't apply for the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card unless you have extremely varied spending and have an average credit score. If you spend a lot on dining, travel or at grocery stores, you can apply for other credit cards that won't charge you an annual fee.

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is one of the best travel credit cards for consumers. It awards an unlimited 2 miles per dollar spent, which makes it great for people who value simplicity and flexibility. Like the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card, this card is ideal for people who don't want to spend their time optimizing rewards. The miles earned through this card can be traded in for travel statement credit. You can use the miles to get cash back, but you shouldn't. The exchange rate works out to a much lower per-point-value. If you travel at least once per year, this card can be useful. You can gather your miles throughout the year, and then use them to erase travel expenses off your bill.

Right now, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is also running a fantastic new promotion. Users get 10x miles on hotels when they pay with their Venture card at hotels.com/Venture. The promotion is running through January 31, 2020.

Note that the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card, unlike the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card, has an annual fee - $0 intro for the first year, $95 after that. Therefore, you need to be sure that getting that extra 0.5% rewards rate is worth the fee. As a rule of thumb, you need to spend $11,800 annually for the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card to be worth the price.

Bottom Line: This one of the best Capital One credit cards for travelers and high spenders. The unlimited 2% rewards rate makes this card hard to beat. If you charge less than $19,000 to your credit card each year, you'll do better by picking up the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card instead.

Select Features
Annual Fee$0 intro for the first year, $95 after that
APR14.74% - 24.74% (Variable)
RewardsUnlimited 2X miles per dollar on every purchase
Bonus50,000 bonus miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months

Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card

It’s difficult to recommend the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card for anyone. The card requires users to have excellent credit but provides just a 1.25% rewards rate on all purchases. If you are someone with a good credit score, you should almost always prefer the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card or Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card to this card. They cover most types of users, and the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card doesn’t get the better of them in any category.

The best feature of the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card is its 20,000 point bonus. To qualify, consumers must spend at least $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. We estimate this bonus to be worth around $200 – better than most no-annual-fee credit cards.

Like the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card, the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card grants users 10x miles on hotels when they pay with their VentureOne card at hotels.com/Venture. The promotion is running through January 31, 2020.

Bottom Line: This is a mediocre credit card that underperforms when compared to other Capital One credit cards. Go with the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card or Capital One® Quicksilver® Card instead.

Capital One® Secured Mastercard®

The Capital One® Secured Mastercard® is intended for people with bad credit scores, and it's one of the best options for this segment of the population. The card doesn't give any rewards, but it does provide a line of credit to those who want to rebuild their credit score. You need to put down a security deposit to open an account -- $49, $99 or $200. In return, you can get an initial credit line between $200 and $3,000. This is different than most secured credit cards, since those typically provide you a credit limit at a 1:1 ratio to your security deposit.

The Capital One® Secured Mastercard® has a very high APR of 24.99% (Variable). Therefore, you shouldn't carry a balance on this card month-to-month, since that will result in heavy interest charges to your account.

Bottom Line: If you are someone working on rebuilding their credit, the Capital One® Secured Mastercard® is a good way to go. With no annual fee, and a flexible credit line, this card is a solid option.

Journey® Student Rewards from Capital One®

The Journey® Student Rewards from Capital One® is the only student card offered by Capital One – fortunately it’s a good one. The card can provides a 1.25% rewards rate to those who pay their bill on time, and doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees. That makes it a solid no-hassle option, especially useful for college students who travel or study abroad. The fact that the card charges no annual fee also makes it a good option for first-timers. You should never cancel your first credit card account. Doing so can damage your credit score. By not charging an annual fee, you will never have to consider shutting down your Journey® Student Rewards from Capital One® account, even if you have no need of it down the line.

Bottom Line: A good option for college students looking for their first credit card. You can get better cash back rewards with other cards, including the Discover it® Student Cash Back. However, those other cards typically require you to optimize and be more involved.

Capital One® Platinum Credit Card

Capital One® Platinum Credit Card

The Capital One® Platinum Credit Card is the weakest offer out of the entire Capital One line-up. The card is available to consumers with average credit scores, but doesn't present much in terms of benefits. Cardholders don't receive any rewards or cash back for using it. There is no 0% introductory APR, or any other features that would make this card a worthwhile investment. To be fair, there is also no annual fee - therefore the card at the very least can provide you with a line of credit. However, even if your credit score is fair-to-average, there are many better cards you could qualify for.

Bottom Line: This card is hard to recommend to any consumer. There are many better offers available for consumers through other issuers. If you are set on getting a card from Capital One, you could also apply for the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card, assuming you spend at least $2,600 per year.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).
