If you’re a frequent traveler, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card might be a good option to consider. When you use it to book a flight with a designated airline, you have ample opportunity to earn points (known as Avios in the British Airways loyalty program) that can go toward your next getaway. You’re always rewarded when you shop. And with no foreign transaction fees, you can shop all you want while abroad without getting any unwanted fees tacked on.
British Airways Visa Signature® Card review: Ideal for BA loyalists
The British Airways Visa Signature® Card provides plenty of ways to earn Avios that can be applied toward your next travel destination. There are Avios loyalty points to be earned when booking your flight or hotel, and when you spend money on other purchases. This card also offers a Travel Together Ticket, which can be redeemed for you and a companion after you spend $30,000 each year.
Earn Avios loyalty points
The British Airways Visa Signature® Card is best for those who spend a lot of time and money traveling — and who fly with British Airways on a regular basis. New cardmembers will enjoy the benefits of earning substantial Avios loyalty points, which can reach up to 100,000 points in total. If you spend $3,000 during your first three months of having your new card, you can earn 50,000 Bonus Avios, and add an extra 50,000 points when you spend $20,000 total on the card during the first year.
And cardmembers have more ways to earn Avios, including when booking a flight with not only British Airways, but also Aer Lingus and Iberia. Here, you can earn 3 Avios for every dollar you spend using your card. And when you book hotel lodging with your card, you also score 2 Avios for every dollar. Every other purchase you make with the card will earn 1 Avios.
Travel Together Ticket
Those who would like to bring along a companion on their next trip will benefit from British Airways Visa Signature® Card’s Travel Together Ticket program, which is earned after spending $30,000 on the card throughout the given year. You and your travel buddy can fly together and have up to two years to use the ticket. All you’ll need to worry about is paying the taxes and fees for both tickets, as well as being on the same flight and same cabin originating from and returning to the United States.
Travel coverage & purchase protection
The British Airways Visa Signature® Card also helps take the worry out of traveling with its travel coverage and purchase protection. If you rent a car within the United States, or while traveling abroad, and have an accident or theft, you are covered. Your new purchases are also covered should anything get damaged or stolen, as your card provides protection for up to 120 days and up to $500 per claim.
Baggage delays can also be a hassle, but with the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, you’re able to get reimbursed for the disruption. With this card, you can receive up to $100 per day (for up to three days) for baggage delays that are more than 6 hours. The money can be used on everyday needs, such as shampoo, toothpaste and new clothing.
No foreign transaction fees
And while you’re traveling abroad, you don’t want to worry about any foreign transaction fees. These fees are assessed when you use your American credit card abroad and can tack on around 3% to each purchase, which can really add up. With the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, you won’t be hit with these surprise charges after a trip abroad when your next statement arrives.
Reward flight statement credit
When you purchase a flight with your rewards (known as a reward flight) or your Travel Together Ticket, you’ll likely have to pay fees and taxes. However, those added fees can be offset when you use your card to pay for them with either a $100 statement credit when booking a flight in economy or premium, or $200 with a business or first-class booking. These statement credits can be received three times a year, with one per booking.
ValuePenguin's verdict: Worth it for British Airways frequent travelers
While there is an annual fee of $95, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card comes packed with travel perks not only for you, but also for a travel companion. The card also offers coverage and protections when traveling so you can worry less about lost or damaged luggage and more about experiencing the sights on your trip. The British Airways Visa Signature® Card is a good option for those who travel a lot with British Airways and are looking to spend a sizeable amount while getting redeemed for it.
Alternatives to the British Airways Visa Signature® Card
The British Airways Visa Signature® Card offers some decent perks for travelers, especially those who are devoted to flying with British Airways. Not only do you mainly have to fly with this airline, but you also need to spend a sizeable amount in order to reap maximum rewards. Plus, the annual fee of $95 can be slightly off-putting, especially if you’re not a frequent traveler. Here are a few alternative credit cards to the British Airways Visa Signature® Card you might be interested in.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the most popular travel rewards cards that allows you to earn and redeem points that aren’t locked in to a specific airline. Earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $1,000 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Cardmembers can then earn 2X points on travel and dining at restaurants, eligible delivery services, takeout and dining out & 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases worldwide.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also allows you to transfer your points to an array of travel and hotel partners, including British Airways Executive Club, JetBlue TrueBlue, Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card comes with travel insurance and shopping protection like the British Airways Visa Signature® Card and doesn’t have any foreign transaction fees. But also like the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, it carries an annual fee of $95 that isn’t waived the first year.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card
The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is another popular travel card where points can be redeemed for a variety of travel purposes. During the first three months of opening your account, you can be rewarded with 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on the card. On top of that, you can also earn 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.
There are never any foreign transaction fees with this card, but it does charge a annual fee $95. Another added bonus: You can get a credit for either TSA Pre✓ or Global Entry, which can be up to $100.
Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers numerous perks for frequent American Airlines travelers, with a generous 50,000-mile signup bonus for new cardmembers. The signup bonus is worth around $700, given our estimate of AAdvantage point value, and is earned by spending $2,500 in the first three months of card ownership. Plus, the cardholder and up to four others on the same reservation receive preferred boarding.
For every dollar you spend on the card, you’ll get Earn 2 AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent at gas stations, restaurants, and on eligible American Airlines purchases. Similar to the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, there are no foreign transaction fees. But the big win for this card is that the annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months.
