Best Wells Fargo Credit Cards 2018

Wells Fargo currently offers 12 credit cards out of which three are clear standouts. The other offers from the issuer provide subpar terms and rewards. In this article we highlight the best Wells Fargo credit cards, and what makes them special.

Note that credit cards are rarely “one-size-fits-all”. Instead, the best credit card for any one person will depend on what they are hoping to get out of it. To that end, we have categorized the best Wells Fargo credit cards by specific niches. You can view our entire methodology here.

Best For The Average Consumer: Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® Card

The Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® Card awards users 1.5% cash back on all their net purchases. Unlike most other credit cards, there are no categories you have to keep track of to optimize your rewards. Instead, you get above average returns across all your purchases. This is particularly useful for people with varied spending, not captured by the typical credit card reward categories.

Based on average consumer spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this card provides the highest annual rewards of any Wells Fargo credit card –- an estimated $257. This figure does not include the 1.8% rate you get on mobile wallet purchases purchases during your first card member year. If you are unsure of which Wells Fargo offer is best for you, this one is a safe bet.

Highlights

  • No annual fee
  • 1.5% cash back rate on all purchases
  • 1.8% cash rewards on qualified mobile wallet purchases during the first year

Top Choice For Travelers: Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card gives consumers 3x points for eating out and ordering in. You'll also get 3x points for purchases at gas stations, rideshares and transit. Furthermore, the 3x points extends to travel purchases, including flights, hotels, homestays, and car rentals. Any purchases that fall outside of the 3x point categories earns you 1x point per dollar. This card is among one of the best choices for Wells Fargo customers and any traveler, alike.

The card has no annual fee, so there is no financial commitment to make in exchange for the great rewards it offers. It's worth noting that if you manage to spend $3,000 on the card within the first 3 months, you'll receive 30,000 bonus points, which have a $300 cash redemption value.

Highlights

  • 30,000 points when you spend $3,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
  • $0 Annual Fee

Other Contenders: Wells Fargo Propel 365 American Express® Card

Wells Fargo Propel 365 American Express® Card
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

The Wells Fargo Propel 365 American Express® Card will be the top Wells Fargo credit card for individuals who can qualify for the 50% point bonus on the base point. You can also benefit from the 25% bonus that doesn't come with the no-annual-fee card. However, you need to spend roughly $30,000 annually on your card for it to be worthwhile. With the 50% bonus consumers can qualify for outstanding rewards rates on gas (3.5%), restaurant (2.5%), and all other purchases (1.5%). With these rates, average consumer can stand to earn $288 per year. To get the 50% bonus, you must be a Wells Fargo Private Bank customer or have a PMA Package of $250,000 or more.

Unlike most Wells Fargo credit cards, the Wells Fargo Propel 365 American Express® Card has a traditional sign-up bonus. Users can earn 20,000 bonus points when they spend $3,000 in net purchases in the first 3 months. We estimate this to be worth roughly $200 -– enough to cover the annual fee for 4 years.

Highlights

  • 3% rewards rate on gas station purchases, 2% at restaurants, and 1% on everything else
  • 10%, 25%, or 50% point bonus depending on the type of account you have opened with Wells Fargo
  • 20,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 in net purchases in the first 3 months

How Other Wells Fargo Credit Cards Stack Up

As we mentioned in the opening, the other seven Wells Fargo credit cards are sub-par. However, they also fulfill certain needs for consumers, which the top three cards don't always meet. We outlined those cards here, and go over the alternatives you can apply for from other issuers.

For Students: Wells Fargo Cash Back College Visa® Card

The Wells Fargo Cash Back College Visa® Card is the only student credit card available through Wells Fargo. It provides cardholders with 3% cash rewards on gas, grocery and drugstore purchases for the first six months. All other spending results in a 1% return. These rewards are fairly average by student credit card standards. Today, individuals in college getting their first credit card can get rewards that are comparable to offers available to those with well established credit histories.

Alternative: Discover it® Student Cash Back

Why It’s Better: Students who want to get rewards that are no different than those from the best credit cards should consider the Discover it® Student Cash Back. This card gives 5% cash back in categories that change each quarter like gas stations, restaurants, wholesale clubs and more - up to a quarterly maximum of $1,500. You’ll earn 1% back after the threshold is reached. Even at its worst, the Discover it® Student Cash Back will provide consumers with rewards similar to the Wells Fargo Cash Back College Visa® Card’s best.

For Balance Transfers

Most of the Wells Fargo credit cards give similar benefits for those seeking balance transfers. Given all these factors are equal, we recommend consumers go with a credit card that will also provide them rewards on their purchases. However, if you are looking to maximize your savings, it’s best to look at better offers with other banks.

Alternative: Chase Slate®

Chase Slate®
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

Why it’s better: The Chase Slate® provides users with 0% intro APR for the first 15 billing cycles. In that way, it’s comparable to the best zero percent periods Wells Fargo offers. What puts the Chase Slate® into the realm of best credit cards is that it also provides a $0 intro fee for balance transfers within the first 60 days. This can potentially save hundreds of dollars. Look at a sample individual who moves over a balance of $16,048. With a Wells Fargo credit card, you would need to pay a fee of $481 to transfer it over. As long as you move the balance within the first 60 days of opening your account, such a fee would be waived with the Chase Slate®.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Methodology

We compared all Wells Fargo credit cards based on average consumer expenditure data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These figures allowed us to create a baseline metric to compare against. We used those numbers to figure out exactly how much rewards consumers can expect out of each card both in the short-term and long-term. We incorporated things like sign-up bonuses, spending rewards, and annual fees into our calculations. In the end, we looked at our estimate for the net rewards provided by each card to judge their value.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
