Credit unions are member-only financial institutions, offering various methods of joining depending on the organization. Many people prefer to bank with a credit union as the members contribute to making decisions for the interest of the entire group. Providing the same services as traditional banks — such as deposits and loans — credit unions also offer credit cards. In some instances, some credit union cards may even outperform products put out by traditional banks.

After looking through dozens of credit union credit cards out there, six cards are worth highlighting based on various consumer needs:

Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card: Best Credit Union Cashback Rewards Credit Card

For most people looking for a credit card through a credit union, the Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card is the best option. This card offers its members a lucrative yet straightforward rewards rate: earn 2.5% cash back on all purchases. Most cards can only match these kinds of rewards in a couple of categories — such as dining and grocery stores — and offer a mere 1% return on all other purchases. With the Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card, you get an above-average rewards rate anywhere you shop without worrying about optimizing bonus categories.

The card comes with an annual fee of $99, waived the first year. Therefore, the Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card is best for those with moderate to high monthly expenses. If you spend at least $330 per month — or $3,960 per year — you'll earn enough cash back to compensate for the annual fee. The table below estimates the cash back you'll make based on how much you spend:

Spend
Cash back
$330 monthly, $3,960 per year$99 cash back
$1,000 monthly, $12,000 per year$300 cash back
$3,000 monthly, $36,000 per year$900 cash back
$5,000 monthly, $60,000 per year$1,500 cash back

[["Spend","Cash back"],["$330 monthly, $3,960 per year","$99 cash back"],["$1,000 monthly, $12,000 per year","$300 cash back"],["$3,000 monthly, $36,000 per year","$900 cash back"],["$5,000 monthly, $60,000 per year","$1,500 cash back

For high spenders, the return on this card will be even greater. The sky's truly the limit with this card — you can earn unlimited cash back on all purchases with no maximum. If you don't spend at least $3,960 each year, we'd recommend looking at other credit cards with no annual fees.

The Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card excels in all other categories, too. There are no foreign transaction fees with this card, and it offers an APR as low as 11.99% to 14.99% variable. With this card, you'll also earn the following protections, both for travel and everyday purchases:

 • Travel accident coverage. When purchasing your trip with this card, you'll receive up to $250,000 of protection in the event of accidental death and dismemberment while traveling.
 • Rental car collision coverage. When paying for your rental car in full with this card and declining the rental company's policy, you'll receive complimentary auto rental coverage due to collision or theft.
 • Roadside assistance. You'll have access to 24-hour, pay-per-use roadside dispatch for towing, tire changing, jump starting and more.
 • Purchase protection. When paying with this card, you'll receive coverage for the first 90 days, with a maximum of $500 per claim and $50,000 per cardholder. This protection also doubles manufacturer warranties through double warranty coverage.
 • Personal identity protection. You can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for covered expenses to restore your identity.

Despite all of this card's excellent protections, this card's only downfall is its lack of a sign-up bonus. However, if you are more interested in long-term gains, this shouldn't affect your decision. With a superb cashback rate, the Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card provides tremendous value for most spenders.

 • Foreign transaction fees: None

This card offers a rewards program, provides low interest and charges a $0 annual fee. Most cards targeted at people with bad credit typically do the opposite, offering high interest rates and no rewards programs.

Instead, the Savings Secured Visa Platinum Card charges a reasonable APR of 11.99% Variable and provides Earn Flexpoints Rewards - 1 point for every $1 spent. You'll earn FlexPoint Rewards, which can be redeemed for gift cards, merchandise, hotel stays, airline tickets and more. While the rewards rate is nothing extraordinary, most secured credit cards lack a rewards program altogether.

The Savings Secured Visa Platinum Card also has a 0% foreign transaction fee and a 0% balance transfer fee — these fees are common among secured credit cards from major banks and other credit unions. Waiving the foreign transaction fee allows you to use this card outside of the U.S. and bypass the standard 3% charge. With no balance transfer fee, you can also lower your debt to build up your credit.

With any secured credit card, you'll have to put down a security deposit that will determine your credit line. The Savings Secured Visa Platinum Card has a minimum credit line of $250. With responsible card use, you can graduate to the standard Platinum Rewards Credit Card and retrieve your security deposit.

Highlights

 • Earn Flexpoints Rewards - 1 point for every $1 spent
 • Minimum security deposit of $250
 • $0 annual fee, 0% balance transfer fee and 0% foreign transaction fee

USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card: Best low interest credit union credit card

The USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card can provide cardholders with a lower APR than most credit cards on the market — from 6.90% - 23.90% variable. Like most credit union credit cards, however, interest rates on this card are offered as a range, and your creditworthiness determines your final APR. If you're approved for this card with a high APR, we don't recommend carrying any balance on the card, as the interest charges can snowball quickly.

Even if you get this card and are given a high APR, you can negotiate a lower rate over time. Assuming you make all your payments on time and your account remains in good standing, you can try to call USAA after a few months and request your interest be lowered. While this isn't guaranteed, anecdotal advice suggests that credit unions are generally open to such requests.

Other benefits include $0 annual fee and $0 foreign transaction fees. Like other USAA credit cards, you'll enjoy the following travel protection benefits:

 • Auto rental coverage. By paying for your rental car with this card, you'll receive 31 days of built-in auto rental coverage worldwide.
 • Travel accident insurance. When purchasing your travel ticket with this card, you can receive reimbursement of up to $500,000 for the loss of life or limb when traveling.
 • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance. When buying your travel ticket with this card, you can receive up to $1,500 per covered person for nonrefundable fare if your trip is canceled or interrupted.
 • Baggage delay reimbursement. You can receive up to $100 a day (for up to three days) if your checked baggage is delayed by four or more hours.

Highlights

 • 6.90% - 23.90% variable regular APR
 • $0 annual fee
 • $0 foreign transaction fees

Is it easier to get a credit card from a credit union?

In many cases, it may be easier to get a credit card from a credit union than a traditional bank. By belonging to a credit union, you are not only a member but a co-owner of the institution as a whole. Since credit unions are much smaller and personalize their services to their members, you have a greater chance of asking for reconsideration if your credit card application is denied.

How to apply for a credit union credit card

To apply for a credit card through any credit union, you must first become a member of the credit union. Check your eligibility first, as some credit unions only offer membership to military members, government workers and their family members. Reach out to your employer and see if they are partnered with any credit unions already. Once you're a part of a credit union, you will apply similarly to any other card application.

ValuePenguin's verdict

Credit union credit cards are a great way to get started with your line of credit or earn potentially higher rewards than any other traditional credit card can offer. Because most credit unions aren't accessible to the general public, you'll want to make sure you qualify for membership status beforehand. Before picking a credit union card, be sure to compare any fees, rewards programs and APRs to maximize value on your spending.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
