Best Overall Credit Card for Uber

Our Thoughts on the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card takes the best overall spot due to its 3x points back on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders. Not only do you get 3x points on ridesharing, but this rewards rate also applies to several other categories: eating out and ordering in, gas stations, transit, flights, hotels, homestays, car rentals and popular streaming services. While most credit cards without an annual fee usually limit what counts under their rewards categories, Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card's travel category includes your typical hotels and flights, but also gas stations, taxis, tolls and garages.

Attractive Welcome Bonus

The welcome offer on the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card is high for a no-annual-fee card. You can earn 20,000 bonus points—worth $200—after spending $1,000 on eligible purchases within three months of opening your account.

Our Thoughts on The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express is the premium credit card for your Uber rides due to its $15 in Uber credits every month and a $20 bonus credit in December—a total of $200 annually. To top it off, you'll become eligible for Uber VIP without meeting the minimum ride requirements.

Premium Features for a Premium Fee

Although The Platinum Card® from American Express has a $550 annual fee, you get a wide range of luxury amenities beyond the annual $200 Uber credit. However, if you don't see yourself using many of the credits or offered amenities, other credit cards have much lower annual fees and better rewards programs. In order to maximize the value of this card, you would have to travel frequently and take advantage of the perks like access to The American Express Global Lounge Collection or complimentary Hilton Honors Gold Status.

Our Thoughts on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is often mentioned alongside The Platinum Card® from American Express for good reason—it offers a better rewards program, but less amenities for a lesser annual fee. You will get a $300 annual travel credit, which can be used for Uber. Once you use up the travel credit, your rideshares will earn you 3 Ultimate Rewards points for every dollar spent.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Ultimate Rewards points you earn from your Uber rides can be spent through the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, which allows you to combine or transfer points with other travel rewards programs including United, Jetblue and Marriott. Although you can't order an Uber through the Chase Travel Portal, if you use it to redeem flights, hotels or car rentals your points will be worth 50% more.

Most Rewarding Credit Card for Uber

Our Thoughts on the Uber Visa Card

If you are a frequent Uber rider who wants to earn the most rewards possible on your Uber rides, you should take a look at the Uber Visa Card. The card awards 5% back on Uber services, including rides, Uber Eats and JUMP bikes and scooters. You also earn 3% back on hotels, airfare and restaurants and 1% back on the remainder of your purchases. On the downside, the card rewards you with Uber Cash, which you can only apply toward Uber expenses. For loyalists of Uber, however, the rewards can take a great chunk off the purchase of additional Uber services.

Additional benefits

On top of its rewards, the Uber Visa Card has a signup bonus of $100 after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days, which is average in terms of signup bonuses. It also offers up to $600 in cell phone protection, if you pay your wireless bill with your card.

Best Rotating Category Credit Card for Uber

Our Thoughts on the Discover it® Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back is another outstanding cash back card that offers an excellent 5% cash back on categories that change every three months and 1% cash back on everything else. Although the 1% cash back is unlimited, the 5% cash back is limited to $1,500 in purchases each quarter every time you activate. Still, this is an excellent value proposition. For 2020, the categories include grocery stores, Walgreens and CVS (January-March), gas stations, Uber, Lyft and wholesale clubs (April-June), restaurants and PayPal (July-September), Amazon.com, Target and Walmart.com (October-December).

Unique Intro Offer

For new cardmembers, Discover will match all the cash back you have earned at the end of your first year. For example, if you've earned $150 in cash back rewards, you'll receive an additional $150. The first year match can potentially make the Discover it® Cash Back the cash back card with the highest earning potential.

How We Made Our Picks for the Best Credit Cards for Uber

After looking through dozens of cards, we chose the 5 strongest credit cards for Uber across several categories. We singled out credit cards that offer low fees, high rewards, long-term value, sign-up bonuses, and other perks.

Fees

Excluding the premium cards, the top cards we chose do not have annual fees, and offer a lot more than typical no-annual fee credit cards. However, we also considered other types of fees, like foreign transaction fees. Although foreign transaction fees wouldn't affect your everyday Uber ride, they can make traveling abroad much more expensive.

Potential Rewards

Our search for the best credit cards for Uber was focused on finding cards that provided cardholders the greatest value. We calculated the value of the cards by assigning a potential dollar value to the rewards rate (based on annual spend) and the perks offered by the card. We then subtracted out any annual fees of the card if to arrive at a final value for the cards.

Long-Term Value

While it's true that short-term rewards like a sign-up bonus can boost a card's value over the first few years, our picks were made under the assumption that our readers would be applying for a card and holding onto it for several years. Therefore, cards with higher rewards rates took front stage when compared to those that come with higher sign-up bonuses.

Sign-Up Bonuses

Though we didn't weigh the sign-up bonuses as heavily as the on-going rewards rate, these bonuses still greatly impacted our best list. We typically preferred sign-up bonuses that had a lower minimum spend, as it is more accessible to a larger number of people.

Other Perks

Although most of the perks revolve around reward points, the premium cards offer some extras that frequent travelers can find well worth the hefty annual fees that come with the premium cards. These may include lounge access and travel credit amongst many others. For example, we put The Platinum Card® from American Express as the best premium card for Uber because of its unique feature that allows you to become a Uber VIP.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
