Best Credit Cards for Uber

The following is a list of credit cards we deemed the best for each of the above mentioned criteria. The list is in no particular order. With how varied people’s interests and spending tends to be, we recognize there is no one best card that will fulfill everyone’s needs. For each category below, we outlined the most valuable features of each credit card in it. We recommend the following to consumers who are:

Best Overall: Citi® Double Cash Card

Why we think it’s one of the best credit cards for Uber: The card will give you 1% back when you first pay for your Uber ride, then another 1% back when you pay your credit card bill. This will give you the strongest flat-rate rewards of any card. Any Uber passenger who values simplicity and savings will fall in love with the Citi® Double Cash Card.

Bottom Line: The Citi® Double Cash Card is excellent for people seeking simple yet solid rewards from their Uber rides. It also helps that the card is excellent to use in other cases.

Very Frequent Uber Customers: Uber Visa Card

Why we think it’s one of the best credit cards for Uber: The Uber Visa Card offers users a solid 2% rewards on all Uber rides and 4% rewards on UberEats. The 4% rewards on dining and 3% rewards on hotel and airfare rival some of the best travel cards available, including the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card. However, the Uber Visa Card doesn’t charge an annual fee, unlike other elite travel cards. Users have a plethora of reward options when redeeming points, including Uber credits, gift cards, and cash back. Below, we list the cash back categories available through the Uber Visa Card:

Spending CategoryCash Back (%)What’s Included?
Dining4%Restaurants, fast food and bars.
Hotel and Airfare3%Airfare, hotels, travel agencies and home share exchanges (Airbnb).
Online Purchases2%Online shopping—including retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Macy’s—Uber purchases, video and music streaming—including Netflix, Pandora, HBO Now, and Apple Music—and more.

In addition to great rewards, the Uber Visa Card offers a variety of excellent perks. With the card’s mobile protection feature, you’re covered if you crack your phone’s screen while stepping out of an Uber. The feature awards cardholders up to $600 for mobile phone damage or theft when you pay your bill using the Uber Visa Card. So, you’ll no longer need to worry about forgetting your phone in one of your Uber rides. If you’re using Uber while you’re abroad, he card features a 0% foreign transaction fee.

Bottom Line: We believe the Uber Visa Card is the best card for frequent Uber customers. If you’re constantly using Uber, it’s hard to beat the plethora of rewards and perks offered with this card. The card offers features that you’d normally have to pay $95 a year for at no cost.

Frequent Travelers: Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

Why we think it’s one of the best credit cards for Uber: The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is one of our favorite travel rewards credit cards, and makes a great credit card for Uber riders too. It earns cardholders rewards faster, and because Uber falls under Capital One's classification of “travel expenses”.

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card users receive 2 miles for every $1 they spend. Those miles can then be redeemed as statement credits at $0.01 per mile. You can also use your miles as cash back, but we advise against doing this, as it would cut the value of your points in half.

Uber operates in 55 different markets worldwide, and consumers who want the best worldwide Uber credit card need look no further than the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card. Travelers who use Uber’s services abroad will also be glad to know the card has no foreign exchange fee. On average, credit cards have an FX fee of 3% - that’s cost that can add up quickly. Individuals who want peace of mind that their credit card is not incurring any additional charges wherever they go, will find it in this feature.

One important consideration about the card's is its annual fee of $95 (waived year 1). Our three other top Uber credit cards have no additional charges, so why pay extra for the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card? If you want the added benefits of earning travel rewards at a good rate on all the spending you do (not just Uber), the annual fee can be worthwhile. We generally recommend this to anybody who charges at least $1,000 a month to their credit card. The rewards you will receive tend to outweigh the hefty annual fee.

Bottom Line: Uber customers who want to earn rewards on more than just their taxi rides should look to the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card. This card frees users up to take advantage of Uber outside of the U.S. at no additional cost, by having no foreign exchange fee.

American Express and Uber

As of 2014, American Express entered into a partnership with Uber. Through this, certain Amex credit cards that participate in Membership Rewards earn users bonus points when used on Uber. All participating credit cards reward 2 points per $1 spent on Uber. Additionally, Amex’s partnership with Uber allows them to offer customers exclusive perks not available through other issuers and networks. As noted above, if you are an Amex cardholder participating in Membership Rewards, you can choose to pay for a ride using your points – directly from the Uber App. Simply connect your Amex credit card to your Uber account by visiting, and before booking your next trip, select Pay with Points as your payment method. Beyond its rewards program, small improvements upon a customer’s user experience like this make American Express our favorite credit card issuer for Uber.

Before applying for a credit card (even ones listed above), be sure to contact American Express and make sure the card you are applying for participates in both Membership Rewards and the Uber promotion, if you intend on taking advantage of those benefits.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
