The Discover it® Cash Back offers one of the highest cash back rates we've seen. With no annual fee, the card comes with 5% back on categories that rotate every quarter. This is considerably better than the typical 1.5% to 2% cash back offered on most other cards. Plus, Discover will match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year.

Track the Rotating Categories

To get the most value out of the Discover it® Cash Back, you’ll have to keep track of the rotating categories and activate your card each quarter. Categories typically include popular shopping destinations like gas stations and grocery stores, so most consumers won't have a hard time benefiting from this card.

Cash Back Restrictions

Unfortunately, the 5% cash back rate is only valid for the first $1,500 in purchases in each category. After you hit that cap, all purchases earn a 1% cashback rate. However, if you max out the $1,500 each quarter and then switch to a card that earns more than 1%, like the Citi® Double Cash Card, you'll still earn $300 in cash back annually.

The Citi® Double Cash Card is the best cash back option for people looking for a simple everyday credit card. The card effectively awards 2% back on all purchases—you get 1% back when you make a purchase and another 1% when you pay your bill.

High Rewards Rate on All Purchases

Very few credit cards offer a 2% rewards rate on every purchase. For the average consumer, the Citi® Double Cash Card offers the best cash back rewards across all spend—and you won't have to activate bonus categories every quarter, like with the Discover it® Cash Back.

The Best 2% Card

There are a few other 2% cash back credit cards on the market, but they have more restrictions and limitations than the Citi® Double Cash Card. For example, the Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card gives you an equivalent 2% cash reward but requires you to sign up for an investment account. You don't need to have a prior banking relationship with Citi to open the Citi® Double Cash Card, just a good credit score.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a fantastic cash back credit card for people with large expenses at gas stations and supermarkets. The card earns 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%)—the highest credit card rewards rate available on supermarket purchases—and 3% back at U.S. gas stations.

Unrivaled Rewards on Supermarket Spending

If you're a heavy spender at supermarkets, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is the best cash back credit card option. Other cash back cards have supermarket spending as a bonus category for three months out of the year or reward all spending at a flat rate. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express will reward you year round with 6% cash back on up to $6,000 in supermarket purchases.

Worth the Annual Fee for Moderate Spenders

The card comes with a $95 annual fee, but it's relatively easy to make that back in rewards. For example, earning the card's welcome bonus, which requires spending $1,000 in the first three months, gets you a $200 statement credit. That means as long as you earn the welcome bonus, the card will pay for itself for the first two years. Plus, you'll only need to spend $200 at supermarkets annually to break even on the fee each year.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of our favorite flat rate cash back credit cards due to its versatility. The card earns 1.5 points per dollar on all purchases, and points can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards, merchandise and even travel, if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

Earn Chase Ultimate Rewards

One of the best parts of the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is that it earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points rather than straight cashback. When combined with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve®, these points can be transferred to travel partners and are often worth more than 1 cent when redeemed for travel.

Perfect for Maximizing Rewards

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® doesn't have the highest rewards rate if you redeem your points for straight cash back. However, this is the best card for people looking to maximize rewards points on all of their purchases. If you already have one of the Chase's annual fee travel cards, this is the perfect complement for non-bonus spending.

We recommend the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business is a great card for business owners who value simplicity. It provides a flat 2% cash back on all purchases, no matter the category. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to earn up to $2,000 in welcome bonuses.

Simplicity for Busy Entrepreneurs

While other business cards earn better cash rewards, they require you to keep track of spending caps and categories. With the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business, you'll earn a 2% flat rate on all purchases—you won't have to worry about choosing your bonus category or remembering which card to use for certain purchases.

Free Cards for Employees

With the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business, you'll also be able to add additional cards for your employees at no extra cost. This is a great perk for budget-conscious business owners, as some other credit cards can charge $75 or more for authorized user cards.

The Uber Visa Card is the winning cash back card for frequent travellers and diners because it awards users with higher rewards rates in these categories than most cards. You'll get 3% back on hotels and airfare purchases, and 4% back on dining at restaurants, takeout, bars and UberEats.

Rewards for Streaming

The rewards are applied as statement credit to your account, so you can use them to erase things on your credit card bill. The card also throws in an extra cash back bonus on online purchases. You get 2% back anytime you use the card to shop online, including paying for music and video streaming services (like Netflix and Spotify).

No Foreign Transaction Fees

This is also one of the few cash back credit cards that doesn't have foreign transaction fees—another huge benefit if you're interested in a credit card for travel. Most cards will charge you a 3% fee anytime you use them outside of the United States. This card waives that charge, meaning you can use it for free anywhere you go in the world.

Our mission is to curate the best financial products available—in this case, the most rewarding cash back credit cards. To accomplish this, we looked at cards offered by the largest issuers, including American Express, Bank of America, Barclays, Capital One, Chase, Citibank and Discover. We also considered cards that frequently appear on other review sites or that were recommended to us by readers. To narrow the list to our final recommendations, we considered the four factors below.

Cash Back Rate Higher Than 1.5%

We determined that the top cash back credit cards should provide no less than 1.5% back on every purchase. There were many cards we came across that gave users just 1-1.25% back. These were eliminated. While some cards may have a default rate of 1%, they should award 2%+ in certain specific shopping categories, like at gas stations or restaurants.

No Annual Fee

Most good cash back credit cards do not charge an annual fee. While some exceptions exist, we gave strong preference to cards that don't charge users for the sole privilege of opening an account. We reason that consumers looking for a high cash back rate wouldn’t want fees eating into their rewards.

Easy to Redeem Cash Back Rewards

Cash back credit cards ought to be simple to use. We eliminated cards with complicated redemption systems, or cards that were advertised as cash back but in reality restricted users on how they could use their rewards. For example, some cards allow users to redeem their points only once per year, and the rewards expire within 30 days of being issued. Such offers were cut, as they unnecessarily complicate things for cardholders.

Spending Caps

Some cash back credit cards come with a limit on how much cash back you can earn at elevated rewards rates. For example, you get 6% cash back on the first $6,000 spent each year. While spending caps on their own aren't a disqualifier, we did examine whether such caps are unreasonable. We did this by examining average consumer expenditure data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and seeing whether the typical user is likely to go over such caps. If that was the case, we kept such cards off our list.

Because the credit card rewards space is quite competitive, we had to cut some cards that are still fantastic. We wanted to highlight several of these offers that may appeal to some readers. Below you'll find outstanding cash back cards that just missed the cut.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: Anyone who frequently shops with this online retailer should have the Amazon Prime Visa card. The card provides the highest cash back rates on Amazon purchases you can get with any card — 5%. It's also no slouch offline either, offering 2% back at gas stations, restaurants and drugstores. The card ultimately didn't make our cut because you have to be a Prime member to get it.

Chase Freedom®: This is the other popular 5% cash back credit card. Like the Discover it® Cash Back, it awards 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. While this is an excellent option for some, it has a less attractive bonus than the Discover it® Cash Back. We recommend you check out our article comparing the two cards in more depth, if you're unsure of which one is better for you. The Chase Freedom® was our favorite cash back card from 2015-2017.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi: This is quite possibly the best credit card for cash back rewards on gas and restaurant spending. The card didn't make our cut for two reasons. First, you have to be a Costco member to apply. Also, this card only awards you cash back rewards once per year, and you have to travel to a Costco store to redeem them. These two conditions make the card a bad deal for many.

As is the case with most top-tier credit cards, the highest rated cash back offers are intended for people with excellent credit scores. Unless you have a credit file that is at least 2 years long, and a FICO score above 680, we recommend you look elsewhere. Students and individuals with bad credit really only have a handful of options for cash back cards. You can check out our guide for students here, and if you're someone with bad credit check out our page here.

Also, if you're someone who carries a balance month-to-month on their credit card look for low interest or balance transfer credit cards instead of cash back ones. Otherwise, you'll end up paying more in interest than you will get in cash back rewards. Consider this. The highest cash back cards award 5% back. Their interest rates are 15% or more. Anything you add to your balance will actually be costing you 10% more.

For most people, we recommend getting a simple everyday cash back credit card that awards 2% back on all your purchases. This is the simplest to use, and will likely lead to the best results. You'll never have to think about your credit card or manage your spending categories. You simply swipe and collect your rewards.

Those willing to put in a little extra effort can get 2-4% cash back on more specialized cards. This requires you to consider where it is you use your credit card the most. Restaurants? Gas stations? Grocery stores? A combination of those? Either way, your goal should be to pick a credit card that awards the highest cash back in the categories where you shop most frequently. If you can't find a card like that, you can default back to using a 2% everyday card.

We only recommend 5% rotating category cash back cards, like the Discover it® Cash Back or the Chase Freedom®, for individuals who know they can stay on top of where they can get the most cash back and remember to activate the cards online every 3 months. If you can do those two things, these cards will provide you with the highest cash back you can get. However, if you're not careful with these cards you'll end up getting a measly 1% back.

No matter what cash back credit card you end up getting, it should provide you with no less than 1.5% back on most purchases, it shouldn't charge any annual fees, and should provide you with statement credit or actual cash rewards. Watch out for cards that are advertised as "cash back" but in reality award you with points that can only be redeemed for merchandise with certain brands. Store cards will often do this. All the credit cards we recommended above are true cash back credit cards. That means you can use the rewards you earn to wipe out charges on your bill.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
