We reviewed dozens of cash back credit cards to figure out which offers are best features and the highest returns. For 2018, our research team came up with a new grading system that allowed us to take a more objective look at what each bank brought to the table, and whether their cards actually translate to good savings and cash back for consumers.

Table of Contents

Top Cash Back Rewards Credit Cards of 2018

Our team went through dozens of cardholder agreements to come up with a list of cards that had the best mix of high cash back returns, easy-to-use programs and little-to-no fees. Note that with the exception of the business credit card, all the credit cards we recommend here have no annual fee. These are the credit cards that currently offer the most cash back rewards on all your spending.

Highest Cash Back Credit Card with No Annual Fee: Discover it® Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back currently provides some of the highest cash back rates we've seen among the 50 cards we studied. The card comes with a generous 5% back on bonus cash categories that rotate every three months—considerably better than the typical 1.5%-2% you find with most other cards. The 5% rate lasts up to the first $1,500 in purchases, and after that you get a standard 1% cash back. This card has an industry-leading cash bonus too. You get all the cash back you earned doubled at the end of your first cardmember year, making this card impossible to beat for most consumers.

To get the highest cash back possible, you’ll have to keep track of the changing categories and how much you spend in them. They typically encompass popular and seasonal merchants, so most consumers won't have a hard time getting good value out of this card. For example, in 2018 the groups included Amazon.com, gas stations and grocery stores. Still, if where you shop is more static and less seasonal, or you think you’ll forget to activate, check out our other great all-year-round cards.

Highlights

  • Rewards rate: 5% cash back at different places every quarter, up to a quarterly maximum each time you activate.
  • Bonus: Discover matches all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year.
  • No annual fee.

Best Everyday Cash Rewards Credit Card: Citi® Double Cash Card

Citi® Double Cash Card
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

The Citi® Double Cash Card is the best cash back option for people who prefer a simple credit card they can use every day and don't want the hassle of changing categories. The card effectively awards 2% back on all purchases. You get 1% back when you charge something to the card, and another 1% return when that purchase is paid off. Very few credit cards are able to provide users with a rewards rate that high across the board on every single purchase. Most will stop at 1.5%. For the average consumer, this card will produce the best cash back rewards because you won’t be losing out on savings by forgetting to activate or use it suboptimally. By not having to jump through activation and category hoops, this card lets you earn a great cash rewards rate with some peace of mind..

While there are a few other 2% credit cards on the market, they more restrictions and limitations than the Citi® Double Cash Card. For example, the Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card gives you an equivalent 2% cash reward but requires you to sign up for an investment account. You don't need to have any prior relationship with Citibank before you open the Citi® Double Cash Card. There's great value in this simplicity that makes this our top recommendation for this category.

Highlights

  • Earn 1% cash back every time you make a purchase, then earn another 1% cash back when that purchase is paid off.
  • The rewards program is simple to use.
  • No bonuses result in poor short-term value when compared to other cash back credit cards.

Best Cash Back Rewards on Gas & Groceries: BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card

The BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card is a premier cash back credit card for families that spend a lot of their money at gas stations, grocery stores and wholesale clubs (like Sam's Club). In these three shopping categories, the card provides unmatched cash rebates, awarding 3%, 3% and 2% respectively. The average family spends approximately $330 each month on groceries, and another $200 on gas at the pump. With this credit card, that amounts to $167 back in your pocket each year. By our calculations, a top-of-the-line 2% cash back card would only provide you with just $127 back.

The one limitation with this card is that the rewards are capped on gas for the first $2,500 in combined grocery/wholesale club/gas purchases each quarter. Once you reach that threshold you earn a standard 1% back. While such caps are normal for rotating category cards like the Discover it® Cash Back, it's uncommon for fixed-category cash back cards like the BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card. Thankfully, the $2,500 cap is quite high, so the average household shouldn't have trouble staying within it. Still, if you do spend a lot more than that on gas and groceries, we recommend applying for a 2% cash back credit card instead.

Highlights

  • Earn a 2% cash-back rate at grocery stores and wholesale clubs.
  • Earn a 3% cash-back rate at gas stations.
  • Grocery store, wholesale clubs, and gas station rewards capped at the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter.

Cash Back Credit Card for Restaurants & Travel: Uber Visa Card

The Uber Visa Card is the winning cash back card for frequent travellers and diners because it awards users with higher rewards rates in these categories than most cards. You'll get 3% back on hotels and airfare purchases, and 4% back on dining at restaurants, takeout, bars and UberEats. The rewards are applied as statement credit to your account, so you can use them to erase things on your credit card bill. The card also throws in an extra cash back bonus on online purchases. You get 2% back anytime you use the card to shop online, including paying for music and video streaming services (like Netflix and Spotify).

This is also one of the few cash back credit cards to have no foreign transaction fees — another huge benefit if you're interested in a credit card for travel. Most cards will charge you a 3% fee anytime you use them outside of the United States. This card, like most good travel cards, waives that charge. That means you can use it freely anywhere you go in the world.

Highlights

  • 4% back on dining at restaurants, takeout, bars and UberEats.
  • 3% back on hotel and airfare.
  • 2% back for online purchases, including Uber, online shopping, video and music streaming services.

Best Cash Back Credit Card for Students: Discover it® Student Cash Back

If you're a student looking for a top cash rewards credit card, the Discover it® Student Cash Back will provide you with the highest rewards, hands down. You get money back (5%) any time you use the card to shop within special categories that rotate every three months, up to a maximum of $1,500 in combined spending. These categories change year-to-year, but you can usually depend on many of them to cover expenses students have to deal with. For example, this year includes Amazon.com. If you use it to buy your textbooks for the semester with this card, you could get a generous 5% cash back on those purchases. With these rewards rates, the Discover it® Student Cash Back blows competitors out of the water.

Here's something else students will appreciate: Discover is one of the most forgiving banks when it comes to making mistakes, which makes it a great starter card. There's no late fee on your first late payment—a feature that can save a forgetful user up to $37. Finally, the Discover it® Student Cash Back has no penalty APR, which means your interest rate won't increase because of late payments. We wish more credit cards geared at students would feature such benefits. Right now, the Discover it® Student Cash Back seems to be one of the few.

Highlights

  • Get the best overall cash-back rate during the first year of membership.
  • Discover doubles all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first cardmember year.
  • Access Discover Deals for additional savings on big brands such as Macy's.
  • Know the caps on the 5% cash-back categories.

Best Cash Back Credit Card for Businesses: Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business

We recommend the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business for businesses in need of a great cash back credit card because of its generous cash rebate and ease of use. The card is one of the simplest cash back credit cards you can have, which is perfect for busy entrepreneurs who value their time and don't want to bother managing their credit card rewards. It provides a flat 2% cash back on all purchases, no matter the category. While other business cards can get better cash rewards, they require you to keep track of spending caps and categories. If you're operating a small business, you likely have many other things on your mind. A credit card shouldn't be adding extra work for you.

From a business perspective, the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business also provides good solutions for managers--another feature our analysts determined to be a "must-have" for top business credit cards. The card allows you to issue employee cards at no additional cost, which is better than most competing cards that charge an annual fee per card). All their purchases will earn cash back for the account, so you can still earn rewards even when your employees are the ones doing the spending. Because all purchases are also logged in a single account, it's easier to keep track from an accounting standpoint.

Highlights

  • Get 2% cash back on all purchases.
  • Pay a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95 after that.
  • Get employee cards at no additional cost.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

How We Arrived at Our Top Picks

Our mission was to produce the most thorough and exhaustive list of top cash back credit cards online. To do this, we spent countless hours going over over credit card offers from America's largest banks and credit unions, online forums and message boards, and various credit card review sites. For each card we poured over the terms and conditions to understand how their cash back programs worked, both in terms of minimum redemptions, expiration and whether they could be used for things other than cash back. We also closely examined each card's fee structure. We checked whether the cards charged annual, late, application or foreign transaction fees. In creating our list, we gave strong preference to cards that charged as few fees as possible.

In total, we spent a combined 245 hours creating this guide, which includes time spent modeling the rewards, setting up 1v1 comparisons between offers, and considering the different consumers profiles that are likely to apply for such cards.

In the end, we prioritized cards that would provide the highest cash back rewards across the largest range of purchases. For example, we would favor a card that gave 5% cash back on grocery shopping over a card that gave 5% back at one particular grocery store chain, like Whole Foods. We did this so that cardholders would never feel locked in because of their credit card rewards. Maximizing for freedom allows consumers to choose stores offering them the lowest prices on goods, and coupling those with outstanding cash back rewards. This strategy will maximize cash rewards, so we used it in determining our recommended cards.

The Selection Criteria

Cash back rate higher than 1.5%. We determined that the top cash back credit cards should provide no less than 1.5% back on every purchase. There were many cards we came across that gave users just 1-1.25% back. These were eliminated. While some cards may have a default rate of 1%, they should award 2%+ in certain specific shopping categories, like at gas stations or restaurants.

No annual fees. Most good cash back credit cards do not charge an annual fee. While some exceptions exist, we gave strong preference to cards that don't charge users for the sole privilege of opening an account. We reason that consumers looking for a high cash back rate wouldn’t want fees eating into their rewards.

Easy to redeem cash back rewards. Cash back credit cards ought to be simple to use. We eliminated cards with complicated redemption systems, or cards that were advertised as cash back but in reality restricted users on how they could use their rewards. For example, some cards allow users to redeem their points only once per year, and the rewards expire within 30 days of being issued. Such offers were cut, as they unnecessarily complicate things for cardholders.

Spending caps. Some cash back credit cards come with a limit on how much cash back you can earn at elevated rewards rates. For example, you get 6% cash back on the first $6,000 spent each year. While spending caps on their own aren't a disqualifier, we did examine whether such caps are unreasonable. We did this by examining average consumer expenditure data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and seeing whether the typical user is likely to go over such caps. If that was the case, we kept such cards off our list.

Popular Cash Back Credit Cards that Didn't Make the Cut

Because the credit card rewards space is quite competitive, we had to cut some cards that are still fantastic. We wanted to highlight several of these offers that may appeal to some readers. Below you'll find outstanding cash back cards that just missed the cut.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: Anyone who frequently shops with this online retailer should have the Amazon Prime Visa card. The card provides the highest cash back rates on Amazon purchases you can get with any card — 5%. It's also no slouch offline either, offering 2% back at gas stations, restaurants and drugstores. The card ultimately didn't make our cut because you have to be a Prime member to get it.

Chase Freedom®: This is the other popular 5% cash back credit card. Like the Discover it® Cash Back, it awards 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. While this is an excellent option for some, it has a less attractive bonus than the Discover it® Cash Back. We recommend you check out our article comparing the two cards in more depth, if you're unsure of which one is better for you. The Chase Freedom® was our favorite cash back card from 2015-2017.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card: This is quite possibly the best credit card for cash back rewards on gas and restaurant spending. The card didn't make our cut for two reasons. First, you have to be a Costco member to apply. Also, this card only awards you cash back rewards once per year, and you have to travel to a Costco store to redeem them. These two conditions make the card a bad deal for many.

How to Choose the Best Cash Back Credit Card

As is the case with most top-tier credit cards, the highest rated cash back offers are intended for people with excellent credit scores. Unless you have a credit file that is at least 2 years long, and a FICO score above 680, we recommend you look elsewhere. Students and individuals with bad credit really only have a handful of options for cash back cards. You can check out our guide for students here, and if you're someone with bad credit check out our page here.

Also, if you're someone who carries a balance month-to-month on their credit card look for low interest or balance transfer credit cards instead of cash back ones. Otherwise, you'll end up paying more in interest than you will get in cash back rewards. Consider this. The highest cash back cards award 5% back. Their interest rates are 15% or more. Anything you add to your balance will actually be costing you 10% more.

For most people, we recommend getting a simple everyday cash back credit card that awards 2% back on all your purchases. This is the simplest to use, and will likely lead to the best results. You'll never have to think about your credit card or manage your spending categories. You simply swipe and collect your rewards.

Those willing to put in a little extra effort can get 2-4% cash back on more specialized cards. This requires you to consider where it is you use your credit card the most. Restaurants? Gas stations? Grocery stores? A combination of those? Either way, your goal should be to pick a credit card that awards the highest cash back in the categories where you shop most frequently. If you can't find a card like that, you can default back to using a 2% everyday card.

We only recommend 5% rotating category cash back cards, like the Discover it® Cash Back or the Chase Freedom®, for individuals who know they can stay on top of where they can get the most cash back and remember to activate the cards online every 3 months. If you can do those two things, these cards will provide you with the highest cash back you can get. However, if you're not careful with these cards you'll end up getting a measly 1% back.

No matter what cash back credit card you end up getting, it should provide you with no less than 1.5% back on most purchases, it shouldn't charge any annual fees, and should provide you with statement credit or actual cash rewards. Watch out for cards that are advertised as "cash back" but in reality award you with points that can only be redeemed for merchandise with certain brands. Store cards will often do this. All the credit cards we recommended above are true cash back credit cards. That means you can use the rewards you earn to wipe out charges on your bill.
