Discover it® - Cashback Match™: Best Cash Back Credit Card with No Annual Fee

The Discover it® - Cashback Match™ is currently our favorite cash back credit card, thanks to its generous rewards structure. To arrive at this recommendation, we examined more than 30 cash back credit cards from America's 15 largest credit card issuers. We then estimated the cash back rewards a typical person can expect, subtracting any annual fees in the process.

A graph showing the estimated cash back rewards for the top 8 credit cards from our survey.

The Discover it® - Cashback Match™ provides up to 5% cash back in bonus categories that rotate every three months. The 5% rate lasts up to the first $1,500 in purchases, and after that you get a standard 1% cash back. The bonus categories change frequently, but they tend to include retailers many people shop with, including Amazon.com and Target. The only catch is that you have to remember to activate your rewards each quarter by logging into your account. If you forget to activate, you'll earn just a measly 1% cash back.

Highlights

  • Rewards rate: 5% cash back at different places every quarter, up to a quarterly maximum.
  • Bonus: Discover matches all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year.
  • No annual fee.
  • Discover it® - Cashback Match™ Review

Chase Freedom®: Best Cash Back Credit Card for Optimizers

The Chase Freedom® has some of the highest rewards available, although it requires a little bit of work to get there. Like the Discover it® - Cashback Match™, this card gives you 5% cash back for certain types of seasonal spending each quarter, up to the first $1,500 in purchases. For example, in the last quarter of 2017, the bonus category included holiday shopping. All other purchases will earn just 1% cash back. We recommend you check out this card's quarterly categories. If they align with where and when you tend to shop, we recommend getting this card over the Discover it® - Cashback Match™.

What puts this card at the top of our list is the great long-term potential with the rewards program it belongs to: Chase Ultimate Rewards. If you pair this card with either the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you'll unlock the ability to combine your points, which will greatly increase their value. You'll be able to redeem your points for cash back as you always did, or you can transfer them to airline or hotel loyalty programs. Both options will substantially increase the net returns you get from this card.

Highlights

  • Get one of the highest rewards rates of any credit card.
  • Get a good savings rate on categories seldom found with other rewards cards (such as local commuter transportation).
  • This card requires you to activate bonus categories, which can be a hassle.

BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card: Best Cash Back Credit Card for Gas and Groceries

The BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card is a fantastic cash back credit card for people who spend a lot of their money at gas stations and supermarkets. Based on the average household budget, we estimate that this card can earn you as much as $668 over two years. This card has no annual fee, so you can keep all that extra cash. While some cards provide higher cash back rates on both gas and groceries, those cards tend to charge users nearly $100 each year.

This card provides 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 3% back on gas for the first $2,500 in combined grocery, wholesale club, and gas purchases each quarter. For all other purchases, the card awards 1% cash back. On average, consumers spend around $1,600 on gas and groceries each quarter, so the $2,500 cap shouldn't be a problem for most. It's also worth pointing out that the card adds a lucrative bonus on top of all of this. Users receive $150 after making at least $500 in purchases in the first 90 days of opening the account.

Highlights

  • Earn a 2% cash-back rate at grocery stores and wholesale clubs.
  • Earn a 3% cash-back rate at gas stations.
  • Grocery store, wholesale clubs, and gas station rewards capped at the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter.

Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® Card: Fixed-Rate Cash Back Credit Card With Bonus

The Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® Card is currently the best fixed-rate cash back card around, thanks to its generous bonus. There are plenty of cards that offer the same 1.5% long-term cash-back rate as the Wells Fargo card. However, it differentiates itself by offering $200 cash back if you spend $1,000 in your first three months with the card. That's $50 more than the next-best bonus. Therefore, if you're someone who cares about good short-term and long-term cash-back rewards, we highly recommend this card.

Moreover, during the first 12 months, you'll earn a 20% cash-back bonus on mobile wallet transactions. This means you'll effectively get 1.8% cash back total on all purchases made with your mobile wallet. If you already use Apple Pay® or Android Pay™ regularly, this is a good deal. There are plenty of opportunities to use mobile wallets today, especially if you tend to shop at Starbucks, Whole Foods, Target and more. Apple Pay itself is accepted at around 4 million locations.

Highlights

  • Earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
  • Get an additional 20% rewards bonus on mobile wallet transactions during the first 12 months from the date the account is opened.
  • Get a $200 cash rewards bonus if you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months.

Citi® Double Cash Credit Card: Fixed-Rate Cash Back Credit Card With No Bonus

If you don't care about bonuses and just want a solid cash-back rate anywhere you shop, then the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card is for you. Every time you make a purchase, Citi® Double Cash Credit Card cardholders earn 1% cash back. Then, when they pay off that purchase on their bill, they earn an additional 1%. This is by far one of the easiest rewards credit cards to use—there are no bonus categories to keep track of and no complicated redemptions or cash-back limits. It's one of the simplest cards on our list.

One downside to using the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card is the lack of any welcome bonus. Nowadays, most credit cards will offer users some sort of incentive to sign up with their card. The absence of this type of reward greatly hurts this card's short-term potential. When you compare this card head-to-head to our other top fixed-rate cash back card, the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® Card, it has the better rewards on everyday spending. However, the Wells Fargo card has a $200 bonus working in its favor. Until you spend $40,000, the extra cash back you get through the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card won't matter. Some people may not hit that kind of spend for two or three years. Consider this when making your choice.

Highlights

  • Earn 1% cash back every time you make a purchase, then earn another 1% cash back when that purchase is paid off.
  • The rewards program is simple to use.
  • No bonuses result in poor short-term value when compared to other cash back credit cards.

Best Cash Back Credit Card for Dining at Restaurants: Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card has one of the highest cash-back rewards rates on restaurant and grocery spending we've seen. In these categories, cardholders can get 3% and 2% cash back, respectively, anytime they shop. Therefore, whether you're dining at home or at a restaurant, this card will provide you with above-average cash-back rates. There are also no limits to worry about: You'll simply swipe and collect your rewards. Unlike many of the other cards on this list, you'll never have to worry about hitting some cap. Given the average household budget, consumers can expect to earn as much as $683 from this card during their first 24 months. That's not bad for a card that doesn't charge an annual fee.

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card is a fairly new product, launched in late 2017. It was preceded by the Premier Dining Rewards Card, which Capital One scrapped. Because of this, we do have some reservations about the card's longevity. As the newest Capital One card, we'll have to wait and see whether it has staying power. In the worst-case scenario, if this card were to be discontinued, you'd likely receive the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card as a replacement, which is a great cash back card in its own right.

Highlights

Best Cash Back Credit Card for Students: Discover it® for Students

The Discover it® for Students credit card is quite similar to the Chase Freedom®, with special seasonal spending categories that can earn you 5% on up to $1,500 in combined spending when you sign up. For new card members, Discover doubles all cash-back rewards at the end of the first year. That would essentially make it, at a bare minimum, a 2% cash back card on all purchases for the duration of that first year.

Here's something students may appreciate: Discover is one of the most forgiving when it comes to making mistakes, which makes it a great starter card. There's no overlimit fee if you go over your credit limit. There's also no late fee on your first late payment—a feature that can save a forgetful user up to $37. Finally, the Discover it® for Students has no penalty APR, which means your interest rate won't increase because of late payments.

Highlights

  • Get the best overall cash-back rate during the first year of membership.
  • Access Discover Deals for additional savings on big brands such as Macy's.
  • Know the caps on the 5% cash-back categories.

Best Cash Back Credit Card for Businesses: Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business

The Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business is an extremely flexible card that can be beneficial for most businesses. It provides 2% cash back on all purchases, no matter the category. Furthermore, new accounts are eligible for a one-time $500 bonus after spending $4,500 on purchases within the first three months. That's enough to cover the card's annual fee for at least eight years.

From a business perspective, the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business provides good solutions for managers. You can issue employee cards at no additional cost. All the purchases they make will earn cash back for the account, so you can still earn rewards even when your employees are the ones doing the spending.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

How to Choose the Best Cash Back Credit Card

Choosing the best cash back credit card is a simple four-step process. First, you should consider which type of cash back card is best for you, and rank the key features you want the most. You should also take into account how much you spend and whether your credit score is good enough to qualify for the cards you want. We go over this evaluation to help you find the best cash back credit card for you.

Find the Right Type of Cash Back Credit Card

Cash back credit cards are the simplest rewards cards, giving you money back on each purchase. These cards fall into 2 subcategories: cards with a fixed cash-back rate and cards with rotating categories. Here are the key differences.

Cards With a Fixed Cash-Back Rate

This is the most common type of cash back credit card. Fixed-rate cash back cards provide one cash-back rate on all purchases or on certain merchant categories. For example, one card may give you 1.5% back on all purchases. Another card may give you 2% back at grocery stores and 1% back everywhere else. If you spend at the same places and stores, we recommend finding a fixed-rate cash-back rewards card that caters to your purchases.

Rotating-Category Cards

These cards earn cash back at different merchants or types of merchants that rotate during the year. For instance, a card may offer 5% back on groceries from January to March and then 5% cash back on restaurant purchases from April to June. But the rewards rate on other purchases may not be very generous. You'll typically need to log into your online account and register for the rotating categories each quarter. If you fail to register, these cards may give you only 1% cash back on all purchases. Chase, Discover and U.S. Bank are the only issuers that offer rotating-category cards.

Compare Key Features of Cash Back Cards

When choosing the best cash back credit card for yourself, focus on the following features and perks that may differ among cards.

Cash-Back Redemption. Some cash back cards are point-based and require you to log into your account to redeem points for cash back or a statement credit. You'll also have the opportunity to redeem points for other items such as merchandise or gift cards. But you'll typically get more value for your points when you redeem for cash back rather than merchandise.

Sign-up Bonus. Many rewards credit cards offer a sign-up bonus after you spend a minimum amount in the first few months of a card's opening. Cash back cards are no different, but they tend to offer the lowest bonuses among rewards cards. On the higher end, you'll get bonuses between $150 and $200 for spending $500 in 3 months.

Foreign Transaction Fees. Most credit cards charge a fee, typically 2% or 3%, when you use the card outside the U.S. Some cash back cards don't charge this fee, which is useful if you want to earn rewards while traveling abroad.

Consider How Much You Spend

How much you charge on a cash back card helps determines if paying an annual fee makes sense. If you spend less than $12,000 per year, then you should opt for a credit card with no annual fee. If you charge more than $12,000, you may want to consider a cash back card that comes with an annual fee; they typically offer the highest rewards rates. Don't rule out a card simply because of an annual fee, though. Instead, consider your spending and other benefits that the card provides. Below is a table to help determine whether your level of spending justifies paying an annual fee.

Annual Spending

Card A Net Cash BackCard B Net Cash BackWinner
$5,000(2% x $5,000) - $50 = $50(1.5% x $5,000) = $75Card B
$10,000(2% x $10,000) - $50 = $150(1.5% x $10,000) = $150Tie
$15,000(2% x $15,000) - $50 = $250(1.5% x $15,000) = $225Card A

What Cards Do You Qualify For?

If you have excellent credit with a long credit history, you'll likely qualify for any cash back credit card. If your credit is good or you have a shorter credit history, it may be harder, but not impossible, to qualify. It depends on each credit card issuer's qualification requirements. If you have a limited credit history or bad credit, your choices for cash back cards are limited. We recommend Discover it Secured for people with bad credit and the Discover it Student for students. Get a free FICO score and look for offers that align with your creditworthiness.
