Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card: Is It Worth Getting?

"Not good enough to be a primary credit card, but can give you decent savings on Bass Pro purchases."

Contents

The Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card is worth having in your wallet, but not as a primary card. It provides good savings on Bass Pro purchases, but falls flat on other everyday categories. Anyone looking to get just one new credit card should take a look at other cash back credit cards that can provide better returns on average.

This card is good for...

  • Anyone who frequently shops at Bass Pro Shops
  • Those who don't mind being rewarded in Bass Pro Shop certificates

This card is bad for...

  • Consumers looking for an everyday credit card
  • People looking for a credit card with a bonus

Review: Our Thoughts on the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card

The Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card can provide fantastic savings to dedicated Bass Pro customers. The 5% rewards rate it provides on in-store purchases will be unmatched by most other offers out there. When it comes to other types purchases, however, this card produces a sub-par 1% return. Before applying you should also be aware of a few problems with the card’s reward program. The reward certificates you earn through the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card are automatically mailed to you every month that you meet the minimum redemption threshold of 500 points. If you fail to use the certificate before it expires, your cash back rewards will be forfeit. This is a significant downside, especially when you compare it to other rewards credit cards that let you accumulate points at your own pace.

The other thing worth pointing out is that all the rewards you earn through this credit card can only be used at Bass Pro shops. Other cash back credit cards, like the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card or the Chase Freedom®, allow members to use their rewards as statement credit, or even have checks mailed to them. This extra degree of freedom can significantly increase the value of a rewards program. Consider how much of a factor something like this would be before applying.

It’s disappointing that the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card doesn’t come with a sign-up bonus. This is a feature we see on most decent credit cards targeted at individuals with good FICO scores. Even other cards with no annual fees can come with welcome offers valued at $100 to $150.

Bottom Line: While this isn’t a good credit card for everyday use, it can provide great rewards for those who frequently shop with Bass Pro Shops. If you are looking to apply for just one new credit card this year, you should consider other options.

Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card Benefits & Features

When you use your Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card to make purchases at Bass Pro shops you’ll earn 5% rewards on most of your purchases there. If you have the Platinum Mastercard version of this card, you will only earn 3%. These rewards come in the form of points that get added to your Outdoor Rewards® account. Whenever you use the credit card, your rewards are separate from the points you’d normally earn through the program without a credit card. Additionally, when the credit card also earns you 1% back at other stores as well – you can get points anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

The Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card doesn't allow you to earn 5% on ALL in-store purchase. There are some exceptions, which include the following:

  • Purchases made from any vendor operating within any Bass Pro Shops Retail Location
  • Taxidermy services
  • Licenses
  • Food, or beverages
  • Purchases of Tracker® Boats, Mercury Motors, RVs and ATVs
  • Expenses incurred in connection with, or at Big Cedar Lodge

This list is not comprehensive. If you are unsure about a particular purchase, you can call Bank of America to confirm with them.

Card Details
  • 5% rewards points on qualifying purchases at Bass Pro Shops® with a World MasterCard® credit card (3% with a Platinum Plus® credit card)
  • Earn 1% on all purchases everywhere else you shop

All the rewards on this credit card come in the form of points that can be later traded in for Bass Pass Pro reward certificates. You need 500 points to receive a $10 certificate. You also can only get your rewards in increments of $10. That means if you stop using the card with anywhere between 1 and 499 points left in your account (or some multiple of that), you will not be able to cash them out.

The program automatically sends out gift cards once per month whenever you have the minimum amount required for redemption. Pay close attention to the expiration date on these. If you fail you use your certificate by the time it expires, the points used to earn it will be forfeit forever.

How Does The Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card Compare to Other Credit Cards on the Market?

To better understand the value of the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card you should see it in the context of other available options. We compared this card to other leading offers on the market to see whether they would be better suited for your needs.

Note that cardmembers can receive cash back in all the cards we discuss below. That means their rewards are not tied to a single store as with the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card. This is worth considering, as the extra freedom afforded by these cards plays a huge role in their overall value. Unless you are a dedicated Bass Pro shopper who can always find use for its rewards certificates, you’ll be better off with anyone of these cards.

Additionally, most of these cash back credit cards come with no annual fee. If you don’t mind opening up two new credit card accounts, getting both cards is a valid strategy.

Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card vs Citi® Double Cash Credit Card

The Citi® Double Cash Credit Card gives users a solid fixed cash back rate on all their purchases. Cardholders get 1% back when they make a purchase, and another 1% back when they pay that purchase off. This effectively translates to a 2% rewards rate on all shopping. While it doesn’t beat the 5% you get with the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card, it does do a better job on everyday purchases. If you only consider getting one card, the breakeven point is 25%. That means Bass Pro Shop purchases would need to make up 25% or more of your total credit card purchases annually for the co-branded credit card to beat the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card. If you don’t meet that criteria, and you only want to apply for one card, you should go with the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card.

This year, the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card made our list of top cash back credit cards. You can read our full review of the card here to find out about what makes the it stand out.

Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card vs Chase Freedom®

The Chase Freedom® is one of the few general consumer cards on the market to match the 5% rewards rate on the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card. Chase Freedom® cardholders get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter. These categories will probably not include Bass Pro Shop purchases, but can save you a ton of money in other popular consumer shopping groups. This year, the bonus categories included things such as gas stations and grocery stores.

The Chase Freedom® also comes with a sign-up bonus, unlike the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card. Users who manage to spend at least $500 within the first 3 months of card membership will receive $150. This is a massive boost to the card’s short-term value. If you have just one purchase to make at Bass Pro Shops in the next three months, it will be better to get the Chase Freedom® and get the bonus, instead of earning the 5% through the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card.

Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card vs Chase Freedom Unlimited®

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is a bit like a marriage between the two cards we described above. It offers 1.5% fixed-rate cash back on all purchases, and comes with a significant welcome bonus that gives it fantastic short-term value. This card is far better for everyday spending than the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card. However, it doesn’t take much for the average returns to tip in the favor of the Bass Pro Shop credit card. As long as Bass Pro purchases make up around 15% of all your credit card purchases annually, the Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor Rewards® Credit Card is the better card to get from a pure returns standpoint.
