The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex Review: Is It a Good Value?

A good card to be used for supermarket and restaurant purchases. For all other shopping, we recommend a fixed rate cash back credit card instead.

4.5/5.0

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex is part of the company's new cross-brand loyalty program, which combines loyalty programs across major chains like Rite Aid. The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex acts as a way for consumers to increase the places they can earn Plenti points at, since they can now expand beyond the existing partners to anywhere American Express is accepted. Since it launched back in 2015, The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex has re-worked its original reward structure into one more favorable for consumers — the card now provides a decent rewards rate of up to 3% on US supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases) and 2% at US restaurants. We recommend those interested in maximizing value to use the Citi® Double Cash Card or Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® on all other spending, since these two cards will earn bigger rewards, where The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex will earn just 1%.

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex Pros:

  • 3 points per dollar at US supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases)
  • No Annual Fee

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex Cons:

  • Low 1% Rewards Rate on most purchases
  • Points expire when not used for 2 years

Review: Is The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex Worth It?

When it comes to pure rewards, The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex is a great deal for those who mostly shop at supermarkets. The card is also quite rewarding when used to pay for restaurant bills, earning a decent rewards rate of 2%. When it comes to other shopping categories, consumers are better off using cards such as Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® or Citi® Double Cash Card instead. Those who are already interested in the Plenti program should definitely consider this card. You can use your regular membership card when shopping at Plenti partner stores and still collect 1 Plenti point per $1; if you use The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex you will earn additional points on top of that.

Plenti Credit Card Rewards Rate

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex doesn't offer much freedom in how you can redeem your points. While a cash back credit card will typically provide rewards that can be used as statement credit - paying down any purchase you have on your account - Plenti points can only be redeemed for credit towards purchases at participating retailers. If you already are a frequent customer of some of the brands associated with Plenti, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Still, if you don't want to worry about things like points expiring or finding ways to redeem, a cash back card will be a better option.

Plenti is also a Membership Rewards partner, which means you can transfer MR points to your Plenti account. We break down this ability to transfer points in more detail in a section below, including a discussion of when the transfer is most worth it.

Using The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex you can earn three points per dollar spent at supermarkets, but only up to $6,000 in purchases each year. If you spend more than that you will earn just one point per dollar. Given the average U.S. household budget dedicates $3,977 annually towards food at home, we believe most individuals should comfortably fit in the three points per dollar range. When The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex is used to pay at restaurants, it will earn an unlimited two points per dollar. All other spending nets you one Plenti point per dollar, no matter where you shop.

When using the card to shop at Plenti affiliated stores, you should remember to still scan your Plenti key tag or the digital Plenti card found in the mobile app. This way, you will earn the one base point you would normally earn as a rewards member, regardless of payment method, and one point per dollar for using The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex. Unfortunately, none of the Plenti program affiliates are restaurants or supermarkets. This means the most you can get by shopping at them is a 2% rewards rate.

Finally, it's worth noting that there is a bonus offer attatched to The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex. Those consumers who will spend at least $250 within the first 3 months can earn 5,000 Plenti points. Assuming you qualify for this bonus, those first $250 spent using the card are actually quite valuable, translating to a 21% rewards rate for that period (250 base Plenti points + 5,000 bonus Plenti points) on the credit card alone. We're ignoring the Plenti points from the membership program, since you get them regardless of the method of payment.

How Much are Plenti Points Worth?

According to American Express, you require 1,000 Plenti points to offset $10 in purchases. That would put the value of a single Plenti point at $10 / 1,000 = $0.01. The rewards rate of The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex, therefore, varies between 1% and 3% - depending on how your spending breaks down. This doesn't include the Plenti points that you would also earn through the loyalty program. If you were to use the reward program in conjunction with one of our two favorite cash back credit cards, the total rewards rate from both would come out to an estimated 2.5% or 3% - making them the better choice for shopping at Plenti affiliated stores.

Plenti points can be redeemed at any one of the participating retailers. You can use your rewards points when checking out or paying at these businesses to cover a portion of your bill.

Transferring Membership Rewards to Plenti Points

If you participate in American Express’ Membership Rewards (MR) program, it is possible for you transfer your MR points over to the Plenti program. This can be done in increments of 500 MR points, which will translate to 750 Plenti points at the current promotional rate, which ends 31 December 2016. After this date, transferring 500 MR points will get you 500 Plenti points, on a simple 1:1 basis.

On average, the value of a single MR point is $0.01, the same as that of a Plenti point. With the promotion, when you move over 500 MR points, a $5 value, you get 750 points in return, which amount to a $7.50 value. This is a 50% increase in the value of your points and is definitely something to take advantage of while the promotion lasts, but you should keep in mind that MR points last indefinitely so long as you hold an MR card in good standing, while Plenti points individually expire if you do not use them within 2 years. MR points also have a great deal of flexibility in the way you can redeem them, compared to the more limited options for using Plenti points.

Comparisons for The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex from Amex

To get a better sense of your options, we broke down in greater detail the differences between The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex, and some of the best alternatives. When we compared The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex against most other rewards credit cards, it didn’t fare too well. You can get a better value by making purchases with virtually any other cash back card.

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex vs Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard®

Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard®
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® rewards users slightly above 1.5% back on all purchases, across the board. In the long-term, this credit card will be the better choice on purchases where The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex doesn't earn you 3% and 2%. The Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® also has a much better bonus than The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex. Users who spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening will earn a $200 cash bonus. While the Plenti affiliated card welcome bonus is lower, it's also easier to qualify for. Bare the requirements in mind, and whether you're budget would allow you to reach them, before committing to either card based on the welcome promo.

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex vs Chase Freedom®

Instead of offering a fixed cash back rate, the Chase Freedom® earns 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter. All other purchases earn unlimited 1% cash back. When you spend within the bonus categories, the Chase Freedom® is the clear winner. Grocery stores tend to show up on the 5% calendar every year. During that time, you should use the Chase Freedom® for your shopping. Throughout the remainder of the year, however, The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex will be the better choice for those categories.

The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex vs Citi® Double Cash Card

The Citi® Double Cash Card outperforms The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex on all shopping outside of supermarkets and restaurants. The Citi card provides its users 1% cash back at the time of purchase, and another 1% back when they pay off their purchase at the end of the month. This applies across all spending. Since both this and The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex come with no annual fee, users should get both to maximize their rewards - using The Plenti® Credit Card from Amex at supermarkets and restaurants, and the Citi® Double Cash Card everywhere else.

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
