Editor's Rating*:

We consider the American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer to be one of the top cards for earning cash back rewards. Note, the card isn't great for everyone and you may be ineligible for the welcome bonus that makes the card worth applying for. The American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer is a great addition to the American Express card portfolio, as it was previously missing a card with a solid all-around rewards rate.

This offer and/or promotion may have since changed, expired, or is no longer available.

*Our team rates credit cards objectively based on independent research, the features the credit card offers users, and how it compares with other available cards in it's category. American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer Review: A Worthwhile Credit Card

The American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer comes with a solid welcome bonuses currently available for an no annual fee card (See Rates & Fees), at a total of $150. Although, American Express recently rolled out some changes to who it awards bonuses to, so you'll want to make sure you qualify before considering this card.

Furthermore, the American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer is easy to use, as cardholders earn Unlimited 1.5% Cash Back on your purchases, meaning there is no need to worry about spending categories. This can be great for users who want a higher rewards rate than the standard 1% without having to put too much thought into their spending. Simplicity comes with its downsides as well, as there are other available cards, such as the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, that come equipped with a greater rewards rate.

One of the major downsides of American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer is its foreign transaction fee of 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to US dollars. (See Rates & Fees). The fee negates any cash back you may earn while spending abroad. For example, if your foreign transaction is $100 total, you would be hit with a $2.70 fee, which is greater than the $1.50 cash back you'd earn. International travelers should consider applying for the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card instead.

Bottom Line: The American Express Cash Magnet® Card – $150 Welcome Offer makes for a great everyday card and its bonus makes it an excellent pick for short-term rewards for those able to meet the spending requirements.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
