Earn 4X points on 2 categories where you spend the most

The American Express® Business Gold Card is one of the most rewarding cards for small business purchases. This is due to it earning valuable, flexible Membership Rewards points and offering a generous 4X category bonus for common business purchases.

With the American Express® Business Gold Card, there is not a set list of bonus categories. Instead, you can Get 4X Membership Rewards® points on the 2 select categories where your business spent the most each month*

There are currently six categories that are eligible for the 4X points per dollar bonus:

  • Airfare purchases directly from airlines
  • U.S. purchases on online, TV and radio advertising
  • U.S. purchases on computer hardware, software and cloud systems from select technology providers
  • U.S. purchases on gas stations
  • U.S. purchases on restaurants, including takeout and delivery
  • U.S. purchases on shipping

Unlike other credit cards, you don’t have to choose the categories where you want to get bonus points — Amex automatically selects the categories for you based on your spending, and these categories can change each month.

Note that the 4X bonus is capped at $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year. (You'll earn only 1 point per dollar spent after reaching that limit.)

Due to this generous category bonus and the high value of Membership Reward points, it's fairly easy to get a good return on your spending. As you can see from our chart below, the American Express® Business Gold Card offers a very high ongoing rewards rate compared to other cards.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
