The American Express® Business Gold Card: Is It A Good Business Card?

The American Express® Business Gold Card: Is It A Good Business Card?

The card provides great benefits and business solutions, but won’t pay off unless your company earns enough rewards from annual spending to come out ahead of the high annual fee.

The American Express® Business Gold Card is a business card that can provide big rewards provided your business is spending a lot of money in select categories. The thing to be careful about is that the card has a very high annual fee ($295 per year). That means that in order for this card to make sense for your business, you'll need to earn enough rewards to offset that annual fee.

The American Express® Business Gold Card is an excellent business card for companies that have high expenses in very specific categories. The card awards users with 4x points per dollar on the 2 categories where users spend the most each billing cycle from the list below:

  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
  • U.S. purchases made directly from select technology providers of computer hardware, software, and cloud solutions
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • U.S. purchases at restaurants
  • U.S. purchases for shipping

It's important to note that the 4x points applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these two categories each calendar year. After you exceed the $150,000 cap, you'll be earning 1 point per dollar. We value the points you earn with the card to be worth $0.01 each, therefore we estimate that the rewards rate on this card will range between 1% and 4%. A 4% rewards rate is among the most competitive rewards rates we've seen on any business card.

Though this card provides a high rewards rate, keep in mind that it also comes with a high annual fee of $295. This means that if your company isn't using its credit card for large purchases, or frequently, then this card may not make sense for your business. If you're unsure whether your company spends enough to offset such a high fee, we recommend exploring different options.

Bottom Line: The American Express® Business Gold Card is a solid card that packs a lot of value, however, businesses should double check whether or not they can get enough out of it to justify the high annual fee.

How Does the American Express® Business Gold Card Compare To Other Business Cards?

In order to better understand whether the American Express® Business Gold Card is worth applying for, we took a look at how it performs when compared to its leading competitors.

The American Express® Business Gold Card vs The Business Platinum® Card from American Express

If during the course of running your company, you find yourself flying on airlines a lot, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express may be the better option. This card is fundamentally different from the American Express® Business Gold Card. Instead of focusing on earning points, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express is all about providing travel perks and amenities that will make it easier for a business traveler to operate on the go. The Business Platinum® Card from American Express provides access to airport lounges, concierge services, and airline fee discounts. While it does come at a significantly higher price point - $450 per year – anyone taking advantage of the lounge access will be automatically coming out ahead in terms of net value.

The American Express® Business Gold Card vs Ink Plus® Business Credit Card

Ink Plus® Business Credit Card
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

The Ink Plus® Business Credit Card is one of our favorite small business credit cards, especially for companies that spend heavily on internet, cable, cellphone and landline services or office supply stores. In these, cardholders will earn 5 points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases. The award points earned are Ultimate Reward points, which we value at $0.0125 each –- 25% better than Membership Reward points by our calculations. The Ink Plus® Business Credit Card also comes with one of the best welcome bonuses around: 60,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first 3 months after account opening. We estimate this bonus to be worth around $750 when used toward travel rewards redeemed through the UR portal.

The American Express® Business Gold Card vs Business Green Rewards Card from American Express

The Business Green Rewards Card from American Express and the American Express® Business Gold Card are two vastly different cards. The former comes with a much lower annual fee of $95 ($0 intro annual fee for the first year), while the latter comes with an annual fee of $295. The Business Green Rewards Card from American Express card allows users to earn 1 point per dollar spent on eligible purchases and 2 points per dollar spent at AmexTravel.com. Both of these cards can be highly rewarding, so we recommend you opt for the one that most closely aligns with your business' expenditures.

Compare Credit Cards

We built the following interactive tool in order to help businesses determine the right credit card option based on their expenditures. The tool provides our estimated 2-year net value for each card offer, and ranks them accordingly.

Card Annual Fee 2-yr Net Rewards Rate

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
