American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card review: Rewards for moderate business spenders

With No annual fee and a competitive cashback rate, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is an excellent option for small business owners who prefer to earn cash back over rewards points. The card lets you Earn 2% cash back on all eligible purchases on up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%. This offer is similar to The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express, which has the same rewards structure but earns Membership Rewards points instead of cash back redeemable as statement credits.

Ultimately, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is best for businesses who spend less than the annual 2% earning cap of $50,000 (roughly $4,000 per month). If your business is spending substantially more than $4,000 every month on your card, you'd be better off with a business credit card that doesn't have a spending cap, like the Capital One Spark Cash for Business.

Who is the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card best for?

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is best for small businesses who plan to spend $50,000 or less each year. This card comes with some excellent perks, including a 0% intro APR offer and a $250 statement credit after you make $3,000 in purchases on your Card in your first 3 months (redeemable for statement credits).

Welcome offer

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card lets you Earn a $250 statement credit after you make $3,000 in purchases on your Card in your first 3 months.

This is a pretty solid welcome offer for a business card. The way you receive your cash back is simple and straightforward (it’s automatically redeemed for statement credits), so you know exactly how much this offer is worth — its value doesn't fluctuate depending on the way you use it (for example, transferring points to partner rewards programs).

Earning rate

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card has a stellar rewards rate: Earn 2% cash back on all eligible purchases on up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%.

This rate is competitive with other top small business credit cards like the Capital One Spark Cash for Business and the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.

Cash back earned is automatically credited to your statement. With a high earning rate and a straightforward rewards redemption structure, you'll get continuous value from this card when you use it for everyday business spending. However, if your business consistently spends more than $50,000 per year on your card, it may be worth it for you to choose a card with similar earning rates that doesn't come with an earning cap.

Expanded Buying Power

One of the best benefits of the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is that it offers Expanded Buying Power, which allows you to spend above your credit limit. There are no over-limit fees or enrollment steps you’ll need to take, and you can continue to earn cash back on purchases above your credit limit.

However, whether or not you're approved to make purchases that exceed your credit limit will depend on your use of the card, payment history, credit record, financial resources known to American Express and other such factors.

Though Expanded Buying Power only requires you to pay the minimum amount due each month, we advise you to always pay your bills in full and on time every month to avoid carrying a balance and going into debt.

0% intro APR

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card offers an intro APR of 0% on purchases for 12 months from date of account opening. After that, a 13.24% - 19.24% Variable APR applies. This benefit is especially valuable for small business owners who may have large start-up costs and could use some leeway paying them off.

With this offer, you'll be able to carry a balance on your card without penalty for an entire year. That said, we always recommend paying off your bill in full and on time each month to avoid going into debt.

Car rental loss and damage insurance

With this American Express small business cashback card, you can be covered for damage to or theft of a rental vehicle. It's important to read all exclusions and restrictions as not all vehicle types or rentals are covered. Note that the coverage is secondary, which means it kicks in for eligible claims not covered by your primary policy.

Other benefits

This feature offers 24/7 emergency assistance and coordination services whenever you travel more than 100 miles from home.

When you use your American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card to make a purchase, you can get extra time added to the original manufacturer’s warranty.

This card’s purchase protection benefit protects your purchases against theft or damage.

With American Express Experiences, you'll get exclusive access to ticket presales and card member-only events in a city near you. These include Broadway shows, concert tours, family and sporting events and more.

Drawbacks

  • Cap on cash back: One of your main considerations before applying for the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card should be your business' budget. While the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card doesn't charge an annual fee, it does cap your 2% cash back rewards at $50,000 per calendar year, and thereafter you'll only get 1% cash back on purchases (redeemable for statement credits). If you’re likely to spend more than $50,000 per year on a card, you should consider the Capital One Spark Cash for Business, which offers the same earning rate — although it comes with an annual fee, it doesn’t put limits on its rewards.
  • Charges foreign transaction fees: A major drawback of the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is that it charges foreign transaction fees of 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to US dollars. Though it may not seem like much, if your company frequently does business abroad, these fees will start to add up quickly. If you plan to make international purchases with our card, you should look for a card that waives foreign transaction fees.

How does the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card compare to other cards?

If the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card doesn't check all your boxes, there are a other cards that may be better suited to your business' needs:

American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card vs. Capital One Spark Cash for Business

Unlimited 2% cash back for an annual fee

If you’re likely to spend more than $50,000 on a card in a year, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business may be the better option for you. For an annual fee of $0 intro for first year; $95 after that, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business lets you earn 2% Cash Back for your business on every purchase, everywhere with no spending cap. Like the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, it also lets you spend above your credit limit. Plus, it offers other great features, including free employee cards and no foreign transaction fees, making it a good option for foreign travel.

On the downside, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business doesn’t have a 0% introductory APR. If you want to finance a purchase for your business at 0%, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is the better way to go.

American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card vs. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

Earn Membership Rewards points instead of cash back

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is almost identical to the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, but it earns American Express Membership Rewards points rather than cash back. If you like hunting for travel deals or redeeming credit card points for lavish vacations, then consider going with The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express. You'll Earn 2X Membership Rewards® points on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners. 2X applies to the first $50,000 in purchases per year, 1 point per dollar thereafter.

For business owners with moderate expenses who prefer travel rewards over cashback, we suggest The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card vs. The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card

Earn 3X points on travel and select business categories

On Chase's Secure Website

The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is a stellar credit card for businesses with high travel expenses. For a $95 annual fee, you'll Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases—with no limit to the amount you can earn.

Plus, this card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, which can be transferred to a variety of travel partners or redeemed for travel directly through the Chase portal. If you're a frequent traveler and your business can justify the $95 annual fee, go with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

Is the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card worth it?

Yes, we feel the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card can be worth it for small business owners who don't spend exorbitantly on their card. If you spend under $50,000 annually, this is a great No annual fee card that comes with a nice intro APR offer, a valuable welcome offer and a competitive earning rate.

That said, if your business has a higher budget than $50,000 per year or makes frequent international transactions, you'll probably get more value from a different business credit card, like the Chase Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card or the Capital One Spark Cash for Business.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
